    Hello Forum Members,

    I tried logging into WordPress a few moments ago and encountered something strange for the first time.

    First, the login page loads unstylized into the upper left corner without any css styles applied to it.

    Second, After I enter my username and password and clicking Log In, instead of seeing my dashboard, it appears it takes me to the “404 ERROR” page of the website with “It looks like nothing was found at this location. Maybe try a search?” with an search box below it.

    I get the black Admin Bar at the very top which shows the WordPress logo drop-down, site name drop-down, Customize, 1 Update, 0 Comments and + New drop-down. This is followed by the website site navigation below it, followed by the website header below that and the actual “404 ERROR” below.

    I can navigate the site navigation, but clicking on any of the links in the Admin bar takes me to the site’s “404 ERROR” page.

    It should be noted, when I installed WP a year ago I installed it into a sub-directory, and basically moved the index.php file(with updated sub-directory path) into the root directory and changed WP Address URL with the sub-directory path under Settings>General.

    I did backup all of the files in the WP sub-directory path a month ago. I also have sql and xml backups from February too.

    This is my first WP site and its been running fine for a year without any issues until now. I’m not sure what to do. My first thought is to put a ticket in with the HOST Provider and see if maybe they have any suggestions.

    Any ideas is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and words.

    George

    Is the front end working normally?

    Yes, front end is fine.

    About two weeks ago I was making some page edits with a gallery plugin I installed last year. The plugin only works in classic mode, not with Gutenberg. But that was just a draft and not published.

    I did run my WIN SCP FTP program just now, since it has a synchronize mode, and the WP subdirectory files on the server match the files on my local backup. The only file differences are a handful of jpgs I uploaded back in April. Odd.

    Try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

    If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

    I tried renaming the plugin folder and that didn’t work. I’ll try the themes approach, but I do have a child theme, so I’m unsure which of the two I need to rename?

    whichever is currently active.

    – If child theme is active, then rename the child theme.

    Thank you T-P, but no luck after changing the child theme name. Still getting the 404 page after logging in. Log in page still appeared unstylized too.

    Not sure if this provides any clues, but I did run inspect/console and noticed three errors but the files are where they should be:

    wp-admin/css/forms.min.css?ver=5.1.1 net::ERR_ABORTED 404 (Not Found)
    wp-admin/css/l10n.min.css?ver=5.1.1 net::ERR_ABORTED 404 (Not Found)
    wp-admin/css/login.min.css?ver=5.1.1 net::ERR_ABORTED 404 (Not Found)
    Unchecked runtime.lastError: The message port closed before a response was received.
    forms.min.css:1 Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found)
    l10n.min.css:1 Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found)
    login.min.css:1 Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found)

    I found the solution. I have an .htaccess file in the wp-admin directory to restrict IP access. Seems my IP changed from what I had before. Updated the IP and now I’m back in business!

    Thank you t-p for your suggestions and time.
