Admin panel hangs / blank screen

    My website works fine, but when logging into /wp-admin, the page hangs and eventually loads to a completely blank white screen.

    I was advised by my host (one.com) to turn on PHP error reporting, which I did. It did come up with an error. Something to do with the function.php (hundreds of times down the page) but then crashed my computer before I had a chance to copy and paste the error code!

    Now every time I try to load my wp-admin with PHP error reporting on, it crashed the whole computer! Is this normal??!

    I have been merrily updating the site as normal (via the CMS facilities, no coding) but nothing else, other than updating the plugins and wp version last night. It worked fine for a time after doing this, but then started hanging / loading the blank page this morning.

    I will try to get the error message again to paste here, but wondered if somebody had an idea or a similar experience.

    Try manually resetting your plugins. If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

    If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via FTP or SFTP, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

    It turned out to be a plugin causing the problem.

    I renamed the plugins folder via FTP which allowed me access to the admin panel, and deactivated all the plugins. I activated them in turn, and it would appear WOOCOMMERCE was the culprit. I updated it and sure enough…all back to normal.

    It’s such a minefield when you don’t know wordpress enough to have the first clue.
