Admin won't load; errorlogs show errors…

  • I haven’t been to one of my blogs in a month. I saw a new user reg so went to delete that user but can’t login. I get the error of “the connection was reset…”. It is instantaneous, no time waiting to load.

    I renamed .htaccess but it didn’t fix it. In the wp-admin directory, the last two file updates were about.php and network.php. The latter is new to me but I don’t need to network my sites. I don’t know why that was edited.

    Something has changed or been changed. Where do I look? The last thing I remember doing (and I have virtually no memory) was hitting “update core” and that was weeks ago.

    I checked error log but nothing for today. The site itself loads fine

  • Try re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    Ok, but shouldn’t I try to find out why this happened first? The site admin worked fine then just decided not to load …

    There’s not a lot we can do to help without any error messages…

    Well, I have mentioned I have no memory, so could not remember which domain. I narrowed it down to 3 of 5 sites it could be. I just logged into ALL 5 admin areas with no problem.

    Does this make any sense????? How could it be broken one day and fine the next?

    What’s even odder is this site is the same one I wrote about in this forum, where posts aren’t showing up, even though it says it was published. All 404 …. for unknown (yet) reasons.

    There are dozens of reasons… the hosts were experiencing problems; they were updating the server; another site on the same server had a rogue, runaway script; the server was hacked; some core WP files were corrupted…

    The list goes on and on. All we can do is try some solutions to common problems as we are, effectively, working blind. The best place to start with if you want specifics is your hosts. Have you contacted them yet?

    No because I thought the error was on my end, not theirs. I’ll go email them now ad see if they say anything useful.

    “This was due to a security script that we were running to shut down wp-admin logins. There was a large scale attack on our network, trying to break into wp-admins.
    This has now been cleared up and you should be all set.”

    You think they would warn us or post on their site.

    Ah – well that would explain a few things. In all fairness to your hosts, they’re usually too busy trying to deal with the problems to contact all of their customers to update them whilst it’s happening. At least they acted quickly to stop your site being hacked.

    I am still being hit several times a minute. They are now beyond admin and are trying user, admin1 and owner. Fortunately my logins are always the U#8r#jdc-type

    There are plugins available that limit login attempts and will block the offending IP if it exceeds the maximum number of attempts allowed. Perhaps that would help here.

    I have it. That’s how I know what they are trying. I block after 3 attempts

    Then there’s not a lot more you can really do about it. If they’re coming from the same IP blocks, you could try blocking access to those IPs via your .htaccess file but that’s about all really. ??

    Always from different IPs but I block the Class C (xxx.xxx.xxx*) just in case.
