Dear Jetpack, I sent an email in to your support team with this just now, but felt this was high priority and needed a quick answer and am hoping for one. I have been using Jetpack Subscription emails for years now with no problems. Suddenly tonight in my emails that went out to subscribers I am showing a section after the excerpt which shows “ads from powerinbox”. I don’t know why this is there. I never turned that feature on. Is this something you changed between yesterday and today? I checked my posting from yesterday at 12:11am and all the ones previously in the recent weeks and it was just the normal excerpt as always with the buttons that normally show up! I do not wish to have these ads in my emails. My subscribers will unsubscribe with those ads in there. How do I turn this off? Why is this showing up suddenly? Please help ASAP!

At least I know it is not something I’m doing. I’m guessing it’s either a mistake on their end, or a new feature they were trying out to see if it bothered subscribers or not. I absolutely so not want this feature as it will drive my subscribers away. My email looks like an advertisement now. And I pray to God they don’t come back and force free subscribers to Jetpack to have to upgrade to turn this advertisement off! I’ve been a loyal Jetpack supporter for five years now and really hope they know this isn’t a good thing at all to put in their subscription emails for anyone, free or paid.

I noticed too. Without being warned of us, it is unacceptable!

    Hi folks!

We’re getting more reports about that – sorry if it’s giving you so much trouble. Over the Christmas holidays it sounds even worse :/

Our very own Jeremy has replied to another user on Github – you can check that here:
    https://github.com/Automattic/jetpack/issues/11025

We’re still looking at it and see what’s the next step going forward with this problem. I recommend you to subscribe to the Github link to get notified when news are up.

Let me know if we can do anything else for you meanwhile ??

I responded over on Github too. Jeremy from Jetpack stated they added this 10 hours ago to all non paying users!!!!!! Are you freaking kidding me. I barely have enough money to even pay for my hosting at GoDaddy and now I have to upgrade to a paid version at Jetpack to see a feature to turn this off? No notifications, no warning, no nothing, just implemented for all of us!!! Now my readers are complaining too and are going to unsubscribe. In light of all the Facebook privacy issues going on, people are skiddish and don’t want to see garbage ads in anything, especially something as simple as an email subscription. I sincerely hope Jetpack will immediately turn this back off and rethink a decision that is going to seriously impact negatively their reputation in the WordPress world.

Come on Jetpack, have some mercy on a poor and currently disabled guy who can’t afford to pay money to turn an unwanted feature off that is scaring what few readers I have away!!!

My first immediate reaction was the website been hacked! which created a lot of unnecessary concern and panic. I don’t recall seeing any announcement in the changelog???

There wasn’t any announcement and yes that was my first reaction too. There are a lot of people who are upset about this and my subscribers are threatening to drop! None of us signed up for a this plugin to show ads we don’t benefit from nor need, that also jeopardize our subscriber base…

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

Hi everyone. I have an update. First of all, I’d like to apologize. The change has now been reverted. The Email ads were implemented for WordPress.com site owners using the free version of WordPress.com, and should not have appeared at all in emails for Jetpack sites like yours.

Future emails for posts from your sites will not include any ads.

Again, sorry for all the trouble, and thank you all for reporting the problem in the first place.

Yes, I agree, subscribers are more likely to drop the subscription following this. I never expect anything to be totally free forever, but this all feels very jolting, and makes me nervous about what might be around the corner, and whether I should be relying on this plugin too heavily in the future.

I have indeed verified this has now been fixed. I just created a quick blog to apologize to my subscribers and reassure them. The email did NOT have the advertisements in them. And yes I agree with @androweb as I’m always fearful what Jetpack could throw in without letting us know that could totally change things for me. Running a 12 Step addiction blog, I have a very sensitive readership and my only hope is that it hasn’t been jeopardized by this ad thing that happened with last night’s posting. Thankfully, they have fixed it and I pray it remains that way…

That is totally understandable. That was a really bad oversight, and something that should not have happened. We’ll take measures to make sure this does not happen again.

In the future, if we were to implement something like this (and I am not saying we will, that is not in the cards), we would aim to communicate about it beforehand. I would recommend following our blog to be sure you get updates and announcements about new features in Jetpack.

Being a free user of Jetpack I always wonder what could be thrown in at any given time. Advertising is a deal breaker and something o could never tolerate or accept with the seriousness of my blog subject material. I hope for Jetpack’s sake, they learned a lesson today from all this with their loyal users…

Glad for your candor, @jeherve, but this was really sloppy and definitely alarmed a lot of our subscribers.
