AdSense not working in Widget

when I try to insert my AdSense HTML code in the side widget (or footer) I get an exclamation mark next to the line (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
the exclamation mark says ‘adsbygoogle’ is not defined
The ads do not load.

I was able to put the same code inside the post and the ads do load there correctly.
I use the free version of the theme Mesmerize.
