    Hi,

I am using Google Site Kit with my WordPress install, where I have Analytics, Adsense and Tag Manager connected. I also have the Privacy & Messaging inside Adsense enabled to gather consent from EU users. However, I am confused as to wheter this is a sufficient set-up.

Site Kit documentation on consent mode does not even mention the “native” Adsense Privacy & Messaging tool as a way to gather consent, and only lists Complianz and Cookiebot – two external providers. https://sitekit.withgoogle.com/documentation/using-site-kit/consent-mode/

Does this mean that the native Adsense consent gathering tool is insufficient to gather EU user consent – and that an external CMP, such as Complianz/Cookiebot is necessary to properly gather consent?`

    Thanks for any advice.

    Kind regards,

    Alf

    Hi Alf,

Thanks for reaching out. And great question as to whether the AdSense banner also covers consent for EU data with consent mode to comply with recent Digital Markets Act (DMA) changes. Certainly it’s not ideal to have both an AdSense consent banner and another banner to manage consent for Analytics.

While we’re limited to Site Kit support queries here in the plugin support forums, as far as I know, the AdSense banner is not a full consent management plugin. The AdSense banner is more specific to displaying ads on your site, using AdSense. Consent mode within Site Kit is more specific for Google Ads (which is different to Google AdSense) and also Google Analytics. When using consent mode within Site Kit, you’ll notice that guide mentions that it must be used alongside a consent management plugin. Such plugins can be used to also configure consent for AdSense, meaning you don’t see to enable the AdSense banner if you’re already gathering consent. Just be sure to configure such plugins to grant consent for AdSense also.

To summarize, you don’t need to enable the AdSense banner if you’re already using a consent management plugin and you’ve already configured this plugin to comply with consent mode and AdSense. Regarding whether the AdSense banner along can be used as an alternative to a consent management plugin, I would suggest reaching out in the AdSense Help Center. I have been performing some checks and I don’t see any such guidance on their official help center at present.

Let me know if you have any further questions with the above.
