Hi, after having run this amazing plugin successfully on a couple of websites they suddenly all stopped to work a couple of weeks ago, I see the message “Version 3.71. availabe”, plus some other plugins to be updated, but nothings happens… has anything changed ?

Moreover I would be interested in understanding better how the plugin works. I mean, is there any kind of cron job somewhere ? How can it run on the system periodically ?

    Thanks a lot

Could I get you to install the Background Update Tester plugin on the site, and see what it finds?

As for how the plugin works, WordPress Core checks for updates sometime around 7pm and 7am, based on the local time of you site. If it finds updates, then they’ll be installed then (depending on your settings, of course).

Currently, there isn’t a method for changing when this occurs, but it’s something I’ll look at adding in a later version. It’s also not possible to trigger externally, though that’s another good idea I’ll look at implementing.

    Hello Gary,
this morning I just found one of my websites updated… and it hadn’t happened in a while, but all the others are still not updated, so I installed the plugin you suggested me on one of them and the results seems to be just fine. I’m attaching here the results:

Automatic background updates require a number of conditions to be met.
PASS: Your WordPress install can communicate with www.ads-software.com securely.
PASS: No version control systems were detected.
PASS: Your installation of WordPress doesn’t require FTP credentials to perform updates.
This site is able to apply these updates automatically. Cool!

If you experience any issues or need support, the volunteers in the www.ads-software.com support forums may be able to help.

So I am as confused as before ?? If I’m not mistaken the update is triggered by a visitor. If a visitor end up on the website between 7pm and 7am it allows the wordpress core to update right ? I have the piwik stats on all of the websites and I’m pretty sure that at least one of them has from 50 to 500 visitors a day, so the update should start…

Can I check anything else ?

There are a bunch of reasons why an auto-update would fail – the updater sanity checks as much as possible, and errs on the side of “if I’m not sure, don’t update”.

Could I get you to check the Spam folder of the Admin email account for the sites that haven’t updated? There may be an email with the subject “WordPress 3.7.1 is available. Please update!”, which would indicate the auto-updater decided not to update.

Finally, please go ahead and perform a manual update – I don’t think there’s any more data we can get out of your sites, so it’d be better for them to be up-to-date.

I have approx 30 sites to maintain. All sites pass the automatic background update tester plugin requirements. All sites has this plugin active with the option to update minor and major core versions, as well as plugins, turned on. The sites are spread over 7 different web hosts.

Result: No sites was updated from 3.7 to 3.7.1 automatically after a week had passed since the release. Then they were all updated manually. Still no sites have been background/automatically updated from 3.7.1 to 3.8.

No (warning) emails regarding update problems or failures have ever been received (other emails, about password changes, user registrations and background plugin updates are received).

Plugins are automatically updated, but usually a few days after the update is available. Emails are also received after these plugin updates, but with no mention of any core updates.

Does core updates, with this plugin installed, really work?

I actually have the same problem, it seems that automatic updated doesn’t work anymore. Maybe the plugin author will be able to give us some more information about it. It’s really sad because it was an amazing plugin to keep all the websites up to date without killing ourselves…

I agree, I had to update from 3.7.1 to 3.8 manually. It does update my plugins though, I enabled debug emails and the messages arrive every now and then.

This plugin worked like a charm before, but now seems to have issues with the core update functionality.

I also think something changed in the core update functionality because sometimes it updates my plugins too and sometimes it doesn’t. This “background update” should be part of wordpress itself. I’ve been using wordpress for 5 years now and the only major drawback I can complain of is having to update lots of installations manually…

I’ll have to chime in on this one, I’ve been waiting to see if the auto update would run from 3.7.1 to 3.8 but it just won’t go. I have the plugin set to update everything. (Major versions).

I have it installed on many blogs using 3 different hosts, and not a single one of them has updated to 3.8 automatically.

The 3.7.1 -> 3.8 update should start happening over the next 24 hours – there were some changes made on the www.ads-software.com side to allow the update to happen automatically.

    Great ??

Ah. I can report that 4 – four – of my sites (out of 30) was automatically updated from 3.7.1 to 3.8 this morning. Something has started happening.

    (@fgiamma)

Yep, one of mine too, the other 7 had already been updated manually so I don’t have any other test install right now, but definitively yes, something is moving ??

Yes – seeing some movement now. Thank you! Is this a permanent “fix” or do I just have to be patient in the future?

Is this a permanent “fix” or do I just have to be patient in the future?

    I guess that’s what we’d all like to know…

I have some ideas to ensure the update happens sooner, without waiting for the go-ahead from the www.ads-software.com API – I’ll hopefully have some time to implement them soon. ??
