Do you mean that you’d like to use a plugin that provides the ability to add advertising within widget areas, beyond the widget areas that come with the theme?

In order to do that you’d need to add a new widget area to the theme, within a child theme so your changes will be preserved when you update the theme.

Yes, Kathryn, that is what I mean. So just getting a plugin and installing it wouldn’t be enough?

It depends on the plugin and how it works. If it’s an ad plugin that relies on an existing widget area in the theme, then you’ll be limited to the widget areas already in the theme. You could always test one out first and see if it displays how you’d like it to.
