• I currently own hundreds of domains and multiple dedicated Windows servers. I am considering using WP for content but need to understand the best approach to installation and configuration. Some of the questions I have are:

      Should I use multi-site?
How can WP resolve multiple domains to the same site?
How can I force WP to resolve to dedicated domain names without using subdomains or subdirectories?

For example, when navigating to my site they may type one of the following:

    https://www.fredlackey.com
    fredlackey.com

I need both of them to resolve to the same WP site but without the need for any other subdomain or folder.

Also, other sites will be active on the same server. It would be great if only one copy of WP was running so that only one copy would need to be maintained.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanx,
    Fred

  • It’s possible to use a multisite installation for that, but seeing as how (I’m guessing that) all of the sites are not related it may not be the best way to go. The pros are that you have one main admin area that can branch off to each site, the code is kept as one single instance so there’s no need to do updates on all of the sites individually and they can be managed from a central point. The cons are that users are shared in multisite so if osmeone’s logged into one site they’re also logged into every other site as a subscriber. This may or may not be a good thing for you. It’s also a lot harder to extract a single site if you ever do want to move anything away.

As far as getting multiple domains working, there’s an extremly good plugin that does just that (I can’t remeber the name of it right now) but it will do what you want it too.
