• After upgrading successfully to 4.4, am unable to Upgrade or Install Themes and Plugins.

Every attempt gets an error indicating the directory could not be created, for example:

An error occurred while updating GoodBye Captcha: Could not create directory. /public_html/wp-content/plugins/goodbye-captcha/

And of course the .maintenance file is left behind, which I have to manually remove.

    I have tried:

    1. Changing directory perms for wp-content and subs to 775 and 777 (they are at 775 now, were at 755)
    2. Disabling all Plugins
    3. Switching to the 2015 theme

I have not had any problems with this install prior to the 4.4 upgrade, even as late as last night, before the upgrade, I installed a couple new templates (no they were not activated) successfully.

    Any help is appreciated.

  • Are you able to update any of the troubles some plugins individually buy either using the bulk update dropdown or ajax update on the plugin?

Can you try to set WP_DEBUG to true in the wp-config file and try again.

    cPanel Version 11.52.1 (build 3)
    Apache Version 2.2.26
    PHP Version 5.3.28
    MySQL Version 5.1.73-cll
    Architecture i686
    Operating System linux
    Perl Version 5.8.8
    Kernel Version 2.6.18-402.el5

Remember this all worked before the 4.4 upgrade. Nothing else on the system changed.

None or the plugins nor Themese will update, either singly or together.

I haven’t set WP_DEBUG yet… I’ll have to review the repercussions of that setting on a live site.

    Thanks again,
    Bil

Meant to mention I don’t have https available on this server yet.

Enabled WP_DEBUG, no new errors reported, same directory error when attempting to update a plugin.

Update, I’m unable to run Customize on a Theme, the header for the menu on the left loads (You are customizing …), but the page just spins and spins, never loading.

Again, this was working before 4.4.

There is a possible fix on the core.trac.www.ads-software.com site, but this may not work for all configurations, all I know is that it worked for me and some other people. The bug seems to be in /wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-ftpext.php around line 333.

Removing the -a fixed it, thanks!
