My blog subdomain has a WordPress blog that has been working fine for over a year. Through my web hosting service, I saw in the Plesk interface that update 5.1 is available. So, I went ahead and performed the update through Plesk. After a few minutes, it reported the success message “The WordPress installations were updated.”

But ever since then, all pages (including the home page, admin access, posts, pages, etc.) report a 404 page not found error.

I am an ASP.NET person, and not a PHP or WordPress person. I’ve done some searching, but haven’t found this specific issue discussed. I’ve contacted the web host’s support folks, but no response yet. I’m at a bit of a loss as to how to proceed to troubleshoot this issue. I do have access to the files, through Plesk, but am not sure where to start.

Any thoughts on what might be going wrong, and a starting place to fix the issue?

    Thanks.

    which php version?
have you contacted your hosting support team to rule out server issues?
can you change the name of your plugin folder via FTP or file manager to rule out a plugin conflict.

    Thanks for your reply.

When I went to check the PHP version in Plesk, it looked like PHP was completely turned off. That certainly didn’t look right, so I turned it back on to version 7.0.33 (which is what it was before), and now my site appears to be back to life…home page, pages, posts. So, thanks for asking the question about the PHP version number…that led me to the solution.

I had opened a support ticket with the web host support folks, but they haven’t responded yet. I will update them that the problem is resolved now.

I’m not sure why PHP got turned off. I checked the site operation five minutes before attempting the 5.1 upgrade, and it was working then. But immediately after the attempted upgrade, it stopped working. And as soon as I turned PHP back on manually, the site started working again. Coincidence? Cause-effect?

Is there anything in the upgrade process that might have temporarily disabled PHP, and then failed to re-enable it?

I’m trying to learn what to avoid doing going forward.

    Thanks again.

I have updated various sites and availability of PHP has been un-impacted — however, I am not familiar with Plesk.

    Future:
    Backup everything before updating.
I often use a staging area to test updates.
I normally update plugins and themes before WordPress version.

Glad to hear you were able to resolve the situation.
