• While I cannot be 100% sure, but today I discovered that many files on my WordPress site were mysteriously deleted, including images and pages. I recovered pages from the trash, but images I cannot recover. I still have not recovered my home page. I updated to 4.7 right after it was released but did not immediately check the integrity of the website, so this is circumstantial but highly coincidental. I suppose the site could have been hacked, but simply finding deleted files, doesn’t seem to be a hack fingerprint. But I’m no expert.

Anyone else have this problem? Any advice on how to recover?

I deactivated all plugins with no improvement. I switched to Theme Twenty Sixteen and no difference.

This is the first one of this nature I have come across these forums.

Did you update using automatic update or manual update?

I used automatic and then re-installed automatically. Aside from the numerous deleted files, the setting for the homepage had been switched from static to posts. Fortunately I could easily change that back and now have my home page again, although with numerous missing images.

    although with numerous missing images.

Are these images also missing in the /wp-content/uploads/

Yes, the are gone from the library completely.

WordPress core files, or some other files?

So far I have not detected the disappearance of any core files, only pages sent to the trash and recoverable and images (probably PDF downloads) which are not recoverable. You can still see the evidence of the missing images at https://www.pupconsortium.net

So far I have not detected the disappearance of any core files,

WP core does not delete images, pages or posts unilaterally. To delete all this is not the default behavior of the WP core.

Also, I could not find any ticket on such issue even though several million people have downloaded 4.7

Therefore, it seems to me this is site/server specific issue.

Are you the only one who has privileges to access the dashboard?

It’s possible your host may have reverted back to older backup of your database.
Also try discussing this issue issue this with your hosting provider.

    Hi.

This has happened to me. With 4.6.6. WP automatically updated to this version yesterday. Now all my images are gone.

Is there any solution to this?

This JUST happened to me today for some crazy reason. I’m using 4.8.3. This is really bad. Had 13 pages get thrown into trash and I don’t even know how many images disappeared. Wow.
