I think there may be conflict with other plugin.
Please add following line in your site’s wp-config.php file and check if any error generated after you save the blog designer settings.

define(‘WP_DEBUG’, true);

reply with error message if any.

Is it possible to have a thumbnail images as well?

Yes, all 4 of 4 blog layouts supporting featured image.

Can you please verify your thumbnail image with posts in backend or please share your blog URL. So, we can check that things from here also.
