Im sorry, i nailed it to a security/performance setting “remove query strings”, which removed the API Key from api.js?render=…

I tested that before, but obviously fell for a servercache so i didnt see the true results beforehands – my bad!

@jesuiseva In my case it was the caching plugin W3Total Cache; but applies to any caching framework.
