The template has far to much happening for me to test an implementation, but have you tried using a reduced test case to see where things break down?

I notice this line:
$backup = $post;
Maybe you could try:

global $post;
$backup = $post; 

$post would be undefined in a Repeater, so maybe declaring global $post; first would help.
