• I just activated the Akismet plugin, but I have a question regarding its operation. How can it check my blog for anything when my blog is not hosted by wordpress.com? WordPress.com doesn’t have any record of my blog. My profile for wordpress.com is different from the profile for my blog, so I assume that these are two different operations. An explanation of this relationship would be helpful. Thanks.

  • From the readme.txt in the akismet plugin folder.

    === Akismet ===

    Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not.

    == Description ==

    Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not and lets you
    review the spam it catches under your blog’s “Comments” admin screen.

    Want to show off how much spam Akismet has caught for you? Just put <?php akismet_counter(); ?> in your template.

    PS: You’ll need a [WordPress.com API key](https://wordpress.com/api-keys/) to use it.
