Update Failed: The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.

Hi. Ever since WordPress started installing akismet for every installation and every update, I have a handful of client sites that can’t update the Akismet “plugin” and get a fatal error. All hosted sites are WordPress Managed hosting. I’ve tried even DELETING the akismet plugin, but it gives permissions errors.

Since malware is a problem with plugins that aren’t updated, would you kindly help me to determine how to delete these akismet installations that have a fatal error and can’t even be updated. I’ve asked Godaddy Support and they tell me this is a wordpress install and I need to go through wordpress support.

I’m a godaddy reseller pro so have probably 8 websites that will not update and gets a fatal error and I am concerned with malware. Please help to offer a solution or what permissions are needed so I can DELETE akismet off the ones that can’t be updated at all.

    thanks very much.

The best solution would be to ask your host to just delete the akismet/ folder in wp-content/plugins/ and then do a clean install of the plugin after that is gone. They should be able to do that, regardless of whether the problem you’re experiencing is related to WordPress.

Deleting this useless plugin via FTP fails – as usual with “Permission denied”.

Deleting it also fails via WordPress – they must have a dollar value with Askimet to keep it there whatever the consequences.

Even just renaming it via FPT doesn’t help – it continues to show in ‘Inactive Plugins’.

Last of the list: GoDaddy are a little short in their supposed Support. They have not got the slightest hint of a clue!

@darkengine2017 – this is a known issue with GoDaddy at the moment. We’ve been working with GoDaddy directly to address these problems as it’s occurring on their end.

Please contact us here with your site and mention the error and that you’re hosted at GoDaddy and one of our Happiness Engineers will take your information to our contacts at GoDaddy to get this fixed temporarily while their engineers work on the permanent solution.
