Akismet Marking all Comments as Spam

  • I’ve seen plenty of posts to this affect, but none of them included resolutions so I’ll give it another shot.

    Akismet is marking ALL comments as spam. It’s one of only two plugins that I have running and the other is just a backup utility so I’m fairly certain it’s Akismet. I triple-checked my settings and even updated to the latest version of WP but no luck. Commenting was working fine until Dec 22nd and then it just started marking everything as spam.

    I’m starting to get a lot of email from my readers – Anyone know what might cause this or what I might try to fix it?

    Thanks for the response Gangerli! Do you find this plugin as effective as Akismet? I get a few thousand spams per week so I have to make sure it’s good! ??

    Checking it out now.

    Allegedly, Akismet is able to learn, so “unspamming” the legitimate comments might teach it to recognize them next time. (Although I have no idea how long this learning process might take.)

    Also, do you have the latest Akismet version? Don’t forget, in the upgrade instructions we are told NOT to delete and/or overwrite our wp-content folder, and the plugins are inside that. Which means, even if you systematically upgrade your WP, you might have missed upgrading your plugins and Akismet.

    EchoZulu, when I started to use WP, there was no Akismet in the standard installation (or I never noticed it is a spam plugin). I searched around, ran into Protect Webform and I never got any spam anymore.

    @moshu Thanks for the reply! This problem started on December 22 and just yesterday I upgraded my WP install for the first time… ever! lol The problem still exists and if unspamming functionality is included in Akismet, it’s not working yet. ??

    @Gangerli Thanks again. I have to give it a shot because Akismet isn’t going to budge on this one I think.

    The learning functionality of Akismet takes time. It will figure it out, if you’re persistent enough. But it will take a while. On the plus side, you’re helping everybody else out by identifying non-spam from spam too. Akismet is a shared system.
