A client of mine has been using Easy Sign Up without problems for months, but recently a spam bot seems to have found their site. Hundreds of submissions started flooding in. The honeypot solution has given some legitimate users trouble signing up (I think this has to do with automatic form filling that some browsers do), so I opted to try Akismet. We got an API key, installed and activated the Akismet plugin, and input the API key.

This doesn’t seem to be doing anything though – we’re still seeing spam coming in frequently.

This is the kind of spam we’re seeing.

Using Easy Sign Up 3.4 + Easy Sign Up Data Extra 5.3 + Akismet 3.3.

Any tips? Did I do something wrong? Can anything be done to help here? Thanks in advance.

Looks like it’s all from the same IP address, maybe block that IP and report it to the provider of that bots ISP or host. Look up the IP https://www.ip-tracker.org/locator/ip-lookup.php

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve set up the IP block and it’s working for now.

This doesn’t solve the problem though – only this specific bot is now blocked, but there’s no protection from other bots. The Easy Sign Up plugin supposedly works with Akismet so I expected spam to be blocked by that. Maybe this feature isn’t where it needs to be yet?

No that’s not the case, the plugin does not integrate with Akismet. Akismet support was removed before Akismet became a paid for service.
