I have Akismet installed, but not activated. An upgrade was available, so I tried to at least keep the plugin updated. It failed. When I tried to delete the plugin, there seems to be a problem with the akismet.php and it won’t let me. I SFTP to the site and try to delete, but the file is owned by Root and it won’t let me delete the folder.

What can I do to get rid of this plugin?
    Thanks!

@sdarte If you can’t delete it via SFTP, I would definitely reach out to your hosting provider for help. Your SFTP creds should allow you to delete the akismet plugin folder, so it sounds like they may need to fix your credentials to allow you to do that.

Or, they could delete it for you if there’s some reason they can’t fix your credentials.

    I hope that helps!

This plugin is auto installing on all of my WordPress websites.
It says it needs to be updated but it will not update.
I cannot uninstall either – the permissions on the folder are wrong.
This is a plugin problem, not a hosting problem, please let us know when it will be fixed.

    Hi @mhales86,

If the permissions don’t allow you to uninstall, then it is a hosting problem. (The file permissions are likely also what’s preventing you from updating the plugin.) We don’t have any control over what the permissions are set to for Akismet plugin files. Your host will be able to either reset the permissions to give you write access or delete the files for you so you can reinstall.

@cfinke Then why is it happening on over 20 websites all hosted at different hosting platforms?

I don’t know. Which files do you not have permission to change, and what are their permissions?

@cfinke It seems it is a GoDaddy issue. Thanks for replying I am working with them and HostGator to get it fixed.

I got with GoDaddy and at first they told me that I was not allowed to uninstall packaged plugins, I guess like JetPack and Akismet. However, when I told them that I couldn’t even upgrade and that the error was in the permissions, they got someone to change the permissions and then told me I could now delete Akismet. I guess it wasn’t part of the package afterall. ??
Anyway, it’s gone! Thanks for the assist!
