I recently moved my blog from WordPress.com to self-hosted. My author comments from before the move aren’t highlighted in red, but those that I make now are highlighted. Is there a simple way for me to highlight all of the comments I have made?

  • Hi there – would it be possible to provide a link to both your new self-hosted site and your old WordPress.com site so I can take a look and see what you mean? Thanks.

    Hi Kathryn,

After some additional research, I believe this has to do with the way WordPress exports/imports comments. My self-hosted blog only highlights the comments that I have made recently, even though my comments were highlighted on WordPress.com.

Here is an example of a page where my comment is highlighted in red: https://anotherpartofme.com/judge-not/

Here is an example where my comment isn’t highlighted (although it was on WordPress.com): https://anotherpartofme.com/seven-years/

The .bypostauthor attribute wasn’t added to my comments that were imported, but it is being added to new ones. Strange, huh?

I just discovered how to fix the problem. I went into my database and found the wp_comments table. Under the User_ID, my newer comments were assigned 4 while older comments were 0. I manually changed the zeroes to fours and voila!

I’m glad you figured this out – great solution!
