• Hi there,

Somewhere between last night and this morning, all the comments on my blog disappeared. The number of comments left still appears (e.g. on this post that has 46: https://www.london-reviews.co.uk/2014/04/13/gale-harold-bfi-filmonomics-talk/ ), but the comments don’t appear below anymore.

I noticed something was up when I received a standard email notification for a comment approval, went to the dashboard to approve it and it wasn’t there. I noticed while logged in that there were several updates needed, including to wp 3.9.1, so I updated thinking that might have been the cause. But it wasn’t. The comment still wasn’t there and I discovered that in fact no comments were visible on the site OR in the admin dashboard at all.

    New comments are working fine.

Any thoughts on where the old comments might have gone? I have hopes they’re still there as the numbers are still visible, but I cannot figure out how to restore them. I really want to – some of my posts have a lot of comments and they’re important to my profile as a blogger.

Thank you in advance for any help.
    Claire

Edit: btw I already deactivated plugins and checked with default theme – still happens.

Still unable to restore my old comments. Anyone have any ideas?

A new comment posted on an old blog with comments, changes the number of comments display to the new number. I.e. a post that previously had 2 comments, now says it has one comment since I approved a new one.

    Thanks,
    Claire

Thanks. I have checked with several themes and the problem is the same.

    did you try with twentyfourteen?

i saw you are using WP-Paginate and that is not update since 2 year. Disable that.

Yes, it’s the same with twentyfourteen. Says I have 46 comments, but shows none of them.

    1. Disable WP-Paginate
    2. Repair sql table with phpmyadmin

Hi, thanks for the advice. I have disabled WP-Paginate, but I don’t know how to repair the table with phpmyadmin because when I try to do it, I get this message:

the storage engine for the table doesn’t support repair

I have investigated this and assume it’s the type of table being used, but I don’t know how to repair the table any other way.

Hi, just as an update – I couldn’t retrieve the comments without my webhost restoring from a back -up to the previous day. This is now sorted, but he had to do it manually because of the size. And the size is due to the amount of spam I was attracting. Apparently there was 95,000 comments, mostly spam. (I had a several hundred genuine comments, but nowhere near 1000.) He said in the previous 48 hours I had received 750 spam comments. Something I didn’t ever really see because of WP plugins automatically allocating them to spam and, I thought, deleting them. (Though this can’t have been the case.)

What I would now like some advice on is how I can stop this from happening again? My webhost has forced me to turn off commenting for the time being as he believes this excess of spam may have been the cause of the lost comments. What can I do to stop this happening again? I have Akismet, but do I need something more powerful?

    Thanks,
    Claire
