I have been backing up with BackWPup all year and I needed to access a file this week and none of my backups will open. The error I get is “Unable to expand” or “The archive may be damaged” (this one is with stuffit expander). I was on PHP 7.0 and just updated to 7.1 and am trying to backup now but its taking a long time. Please help.

    Hi @designrox
Did you using Windows when open the backup file? If so, please try to open it with another archive manager like Winrar or 7zip. Thanks!

just updated to 7.1 and am trying to back up now but it is taking a long time

maybe your site recently has more content, so the backup can take a long time.

Hope my answer help you ??

I am not using Windows. I am using a Mac. I manage several other websites as well and use BackWPup and those all open fine with stuffit or the default MAC zip opener. Why would the rest open but this one website’s backup will not? Aren’t winrar for 7zip for windows machines?

I switched the extension to tar.gzip and that one opened just fine. I did get an error for that one called “WARNING: Signal “SIGTERM” (Termination signal) is sent to script!” but the job finished and I was able to open it. Why would the tar.gzip open but not the regular zip?

    Hi @designrox,
So I think the backup progress has been killed when running, or you have a download issue, so that may lead to a backup file is corrupted.

I switched the extension to tar.gzip and that one opened just fine. I did get an error for that one called “WARNING: Signal “SIGTERM” (Termination signal) is sent to script!”

“WARNING: Signal “SIGTERM” (Termination signal) this means that your server want to kill the backup progress when it running, so please try the following to see if the warning is gone:

    – go to BackWPup > Settings > Jobs, try to set Maximum Script Execution Time setting to about 20 or 25 secs.

    – go to BackWPUp -> Settings -> Job tab -> Reduce server load and choose medium or maximum(you need to test with both of them to find what best for you)

    Hope that works ??

I did a second backup without changing anything (leaving it as tar extension) and this time it backed up fine without any errors. So it seems the issue is backing it up with zip extension selected. I am currently set to 25 seconds on Execution time and Medium for server load. I changed the extension back to zip to see if that helped. So after I changed it back to zip I tried to do another backup. This time is said the job was done with zero errors so I checked my dropbox and nothing was there so I went back to the screen and tried to run the job again. This time it started off right at the “trying to create backup archive” spot and it had a warning of “WARNING: Job restarts due to inactivity for more than 5 minutes.” Then 4 minutes later it uploaded and said the job was done again. I checked my dropbox and was able to download it and open it just fine.

So I’m wondering if the reason I couldn’t open the other backups is because they never finished even though they said the job was done. There must have been something there that prevented the file from actually finishing properly and maybe that caused the error/corruption? If so, how do I avoid this when I have it to set to auto backups?

    Hi @designrox
The only reason for this issue that I can think about is your server has an issue with PHP zip extension.
So I think you can avoid it in the future by store backup to another archive type like Tar.
Hope my answer helps you ??
