• This problem is in regard to https://www.johnnyschoice.com
Now running WP v.4.5.3 though the problem occurred with an earlier version in place. I updated the WP version as one of the troubleshooting measures taken. The problem is the same regardless of browser type (Chrome, Internet Explorer, Edge – all latest versions)
The theme is iFeature Pro 4 by Cyber Chimps.

The website displays properly on the internet, however pages cannot be edited.

I logged on to wp-admin to edit a page and found all pages listed in the pages list but when opened to edit them were empty of all text/media content and formatting except for the page title. Also, most media library content does show on the media library index page.

Past page revisions do not restore. New image content cannot be uploaded.

A check of the files in the file manager of the host ISP’s cPanel shows that the media image files are still there. I’m not sure whether the page text and formatting is still there. Database backups reflect what is seen in the dashboard (content is gone) so cannot be used.

An attempt to update one of the pages to see if it would reset the page’s content and formatting caused the page to go blank (no content/formatting) when viewed in a browser. (https://johnnyschoice.com/?page_id=188)

It is as though the dashboard UI cannot find the content or media databases, but the databases are found when there is an internet request to display the website.

I hope someone can help. Thank you.

    Bruce

  • Hi, Bruce, & welcome to the WordPress support forum. First, I’m sorry you’re experiencing this. Let’s see if we can’t help troubleshoot it for you. What helped greatly was that you provided such good information, & that included a link to your site. Thank you *so much* for that!

Firstly, could you please change to a default theme, then see if you can edit a page? If so, then it’s pretty obvious the theme is at fault. The solution is to see if MailChimp has an updated version. If that doesn’t work, however, go ahead & reactivate your theme, & we’ll continue to the next step.

Step 2: please try renaming your plugins folder to something like plugins1, & then try editing a page. You may need to clear your browser cache while doing this. If that works, then what we know at this point is that 1 of your plugins is at fault. Rename your plugins folder back to its original name, but rename every folder under it except 1. Putting a 1 or a .old on the end of the folder name is fine. Probably start by leaving Akismet w/its original name, as it’s a core plugin & not likely to interfere. Then log in & try to edit a page. If you’re good, change 1 name at a time, clearing your browser cache & logging in & trying to edit after each name change. You’ll know which plugin is at fault when you can’t do that after a name change.

If those steps don’t work, then please open your wp-config.php file & change wp-debug from false to true. Any errors your site is throwing will display on your dashboard (& your homepage, too, most likely). Thus, please only leave this on long enough to obtain the needed information, as it does pose a security risk to your site if left on long enough for roving eyes w/bad intent to see. You can paste any error msgs here if you’re unsure of the meaning.

There may also be error logs in your WordPress folder(s) called error.log or error_log. Looking at these may help spot where the trouble might be coming from. Lastly, some hosting providers have aplets in their control panels that allow the site owner to read error logs for their site. Again, feel free to paste anything here you feel might be relevant. Please make sure no user credentials are present (they shouldn’t be w/error logs), & you may wish to enclose entries in like:

    first entry
    2nd entry.

Please let us know if we may assist further.
