I’m new to WordPress and I’m creating my first site using Beaver Builder (Pro Version).

I’ve set up several pages, all but one work and function as they should. However I if I view the site and choose the one page from the menu I get…

    Forbidden

You don’t have permission to access /free-downloads/mixes/ on this server.

I tried deleting the page and then adding it again, thinking this would do the trick, but the page still won’t work.

I’ve tried adding a new page and it works fine, so I’ve no idea why it chooses not to like this one particular page.

The plugins I have installed and activated are:
    Beaver Builder Plugin (Pro Version)
    MailChimp for WordPress
    Maintenance Mode
    Ninja Forms
    Title Remover
    Ultimate Social Media PLUS
    W3 Total Cache
    Wordfence Security
    Yoast SEO

I have other plugins installed but not currently activated. All plugins and WordPress are up to date.

The un-functioning page has no content, nor is using any plugins, due to never having worked.

One last thing, as well as try and access the page to view it, I also went through the WP dashboard to see if I could just go straight to edit it, but get the same permission message.

    All help greatly appreciated!

  • Time to do basic troubleshooting. Disable all plugins and themes except a default WordPress theme (like twentyfifteen).

Does the site work? Can you access the page? If not, it could be a server issue (or at least something beyond default WordPress at any rate). If yes, great, move on to the next step.

Now turn on your custom theme and test. Does everything work? If not, the issue is probably with the theme – contact the theme developer for support. If yes, great, move on to the next step.

Now enable your plugins, one at a time, testing after you enable each plugin. If everything works, go to the next plugin. If it doesn’t work, then check with the developers of the last enabled plugin for support. If everything works, great, whatever it was is now fixed and you can continue building your site.

Through this process you can help identify what the issue might be and what might be causing it.

    Thanks for the help…

I disabled all plugins and switched to the twentyfifteen theme and when I go to that page I still get the error message…

    Forbidden
You don’t have permission to access /free-downloads/mixes/ on this server.

So it seems to be a server issue. Do you know how I can resolve this?

Do you have another page or post that is accessible from the same URL? This sometimes happens when category and tag names coincide or when the permalinks are improperly set up or when a plugin installs a custom post type or taxonomy which conflicts with an existing tag or category etc… Something to check.

Check what happens when you temporarily change your permalinks to something different by going to Settings > Permalinks.

Check your server isn’t blocking the page or directory. Apache uses rewrites in .htaccess, this is where custom rewrites at the server level are likely to be found on an Apache server.

Clean both your WordPress cache and browser cache then check for the page again. It is safe to manually delete the cache directory which sits under wp-content/cache (do not delete wp-content).

If your web host provides a cache then reset the web host provided cache.

If you use CloudFlare or another CDN then disable it temporarily.

If the download is being added by a plugin, maybe the plugin is at fault. Ask the plugin developer to assist troubleshooting it.

I don’t have any other page that uses the same URL.

I changed the permalink by adding the number ‘1’ to the end of it and the page now opens. I changed it back and get the same error message.

I’m a bit lost by your other suggestions. I’ve spent just over a week working on WordPress and have no previous experience of WP or anything to do with building web pages, servers, hosting, etc.

If you can point me to a page that can provide easy to follow instructions for any of your other suggestions that would be great.

I changed the permalink by adding the number ‘1’ to the end of it and the page now opens. I changed it back and get the same error message.

It sounds to me as though there is already a folder named /free-downloads/mixes/ on your server, and in the case where a folder or file already exists, that’s going to take precedence over a WordPress post or page which shares the same URL.

Can you check to see if such a folder does, in fact, exist?

Problem solved! Big thanks girlieworks. I had set up a folder with the files I wanted to upload for that page. I’ve renamed the folder and everything is now working fine. Thanks again!

    You’re welcome!
