I had everything installed and was just beginning to adjust settings, etc., then got a “404 not found on this server” (smallbones.ca). (I wasn’t ready to take the blog public, so there’s no link from my website.)
I uploaded the theme “life-is-simple”. It said there is a new version & I tried to automatically update, but it wouldn’t accept any user & password (I’m not even sure if it wanted my wp ones or my server ones, but I tried everything). So I gave up on that & proceeded without the update. I gave my blog a title and one or two other very small things – can’t remember now. (I chose a permalink a few days ago so I assume that isn’t the problem.) When I tried to move away from the settings tab, it went to the 404 page for every page. Now it won’t accept my login info, either, also a 404 error.
I’ve checked a lot of FAQs & done a search on 404 but nothing seems to describe my situation. Help please!!

  • Did you install any plugins or activate any theme other than the default theme?

No plugins, but yes, installed a new theme, as mentioned (life-is-simple).

FTP into your site and rename the wp-content/themes/life-is-simple folder. Whilst you’e in there, rename/delete the .htaccess file in your WP root folder.

Thanks! Okay, I went to my server account control panel and renamed the folder to life-is-simple-1. Then I tried the wp-admin entrance and the login, but still no luck. What URL should I be trying at this point?
There is no .htaccess file. It DOES show my website .htaccess file so I assume it’s not because it’s a hidden file but there really isn’t one. Should I add one and if so, what should be in it?
BTW, I’m still on dial-up so everything takes some time.

Nope, the first one doesn’t work at all. The second one (https://smallbones.ca/Blog/wp-login.php ) takes me to a generic looking log-in page, but it gives me “404 not found” when I try to log in. One interesting thing — at the bottom of the log-in it says “Back to Simple, Sustainable, Natural Living” which is the name I gave my blog. Is this a hint to the problem?

Yes. Plus I’m also seeing urls starting with https://smallbones.ca/Simple,Natural,Sustainable which makes me think that plain text was added to either the site or blog url in Admin/Settings/General.

Have a look at Changing_The_Site_URL and use the wp-config.php method to reset both the blog and site url back to https://smallbones.ca/blog

I was excited thinking this would be the fix, but no, still get 404. The login page now includes the 2 new lines at the top & the same one at the bottom.

    define(‘WP_HOME’,’https://smallbones.ca/blog’); define(‘WP_SITEURL’,’https://smallbones.ca/blog’);
    Simple, Sustainable, Natural Living

← Back to Simple, Sustainable, Natural Living

Should I try some of the other fixes at Changing_The_Site_URL? (I’m going to have lunch now & do some work, but I’ll be back here to keep trying until it works!)

    Check out https://smallbones.ca/blog/wp-login.php

    I think there’s a mistake in your wp-config.php additions.

    (@bowlofcherries)

Yes, that’s when I get the login page, try to log in, and get the 404 with the lines as it says in my last post. I made the wp-config.php additions exactly as above.
Maybe I’ll try some of the other fixes at Changing_The_Site_URL

    I’ve got it! Yippeeeee!

I did the theme functions addition as suggested at Changing_The_Site_URL. It worked, so I removed the other changes and it still works.

Now I hope to find the time to get this blog up and running the rest of the way!

    Thanks for your help.
