• At first, this theme looks to be very promising, clean and effective. But there is one major flaw you can not effectively customize it. For example, I need to replace the published date with last modified but it just can’t be done.

If you go through generetepress support the solution will either not work, or they ask to add css code. Now this may seem to be working buy google will never update or show last updated date.

If you really dip deep you find of all different solutions almost none of them work with effect on both front and backend of the webpage. The one solution that do work is of adding custom php filter that too bring new problems such as a large graphiti/logo of author with the text “last updated”.

You cannot not find any working solution nor the support staff helps. All they doo is to refer this post, this answer, this and that and at last none of them work.

    Hi there,

I’m sorry you had a negative experience – I’ll try my best to address your concerns.

For example, I need to replace the published date with last modified but it just can’t be done.

Showing the updated date is definitely possible, but it does take a little code to accomplish as of right now. We try our best to provide as many options as possible without bloating the theme, but we are looking at adding some more date-related options to help with issues like this.

When it comes to Google showing the date, it really depends on them. All the theme can do is display the date and include the necessary structured data (both things GeneratePress does by default). Once that’s done, it’s 100% up to Google. This page has some good insights into this issue: https://webmasters.stackexchange.com/questions/87239/how-to-update-the-date-on-google-search-results

I’m not too sure what you mean here – perhaps you tried some code we provided that was specific to one of our users? If you want to use the filter method to show only the updated date (some users have had better luck with this when it comes to Google), this is the code you want to use: https://docs.generatepress.com/article/generate_post_date_output/#only-show-updated-date

One of the great things about our support forum is that you can find the answers to your questions without having to ask them. Of course, sometimes it’s necessary to post your own questions, especially if the solutions you’re finding aren’t helping with your specific issue.

We do our best to help with every question we get. Sometimes, when possible, we will link to past support topics which we believe will help. Of course, if they don’t help, we’re more than happy to work to find a solution specific to you. We’ve never left any of our users in the dark, and we never will.

Sorry again that you had trouble with the theme, I hope you find something that works for you. If you have any questions or need any help, we’ll be here ??

This is a free theme, and its authors are using their free time to provide support for it. Support forums exist so that you can post your problems there and this review shows you are just complaining while the real problem is you not investing time to learn how to manage your theme in your site. The premium theme exists so you can customise it to your liking without touching code, and while I acknowledge that GP free has very few customisation options compared to other themes, the fact that the premium version exists means that you need to get that one or familiarise yourself with some HTML, CSS and PHP (copy and paste, edit, etc) so you can design a site to your liking, or even get a designer to do it for you! All this review shows is your impatience (and sorry to say ignorance) rather than the failure of the theme or GP team to assist you. I have made several premia looking blogs for myself and a few friends from the free theme itself and they all look fabulous, and you know what? It is done through the custom snippets you mention (plus CSS and HTML). I advise you to take some time to learn what I just mentioned or look for another theme altogether because it is a free world. Cheers!

NB: Google takes time to show your updated date. Don’t expect it to happen in an instance. More so, the theme authors point you to documentation so you can follow the guidelines to get your desired effect, and if it does not work, you raise the issue again with them! FYI, you seem very impatient.

I am just a user of WP for 15 years and have used many themes.

GP is one of the most feature-full free themes available.

    The support is fantastic.

    To say:

But there is one major flaw you can not effectively customize it. For example, I need to replace the published date with last modified but it just can’t be done.

    Is very unfair, because:

    1) MOST if not ALL free themes would not allow you to do this within Customize. It would definitely take code.

    2) Calling it a MAJOR flaw is exaggeration.

Please keep in mind the millions of users of WP depend on accurate and reasonable reviews to allow them to select themes and plugins.

When a theme is so unfairly rated, people may use it less, which is unfair to them because they are missing out on a theme that might work very well for them.

So you are doing all users a disservice.

Please keep in mind creating themes is the livelihood for many people. By leaving an unfair review you can reduce their income. It is no different than leaving a bad review of a good restaurant. The restaurant suffers unfairly.

Please consider changing the number of stars.

I totally agree: The review is probably the most unfair review I’ve ever read. This is one of the best themes (if not THE best) I have tried and used. Besides, the licence conditions for the premium version are very generous.
