The feed has been working for around a year now but for the past couple weeks it has been stuck in “Processing” on a couple of my sites. When I go to the feed link it show a 404 on one site and the other says “This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.” Things I have tried with no success:

    – clear feed process
    – re-initialize plugin
    – deactivate reactivate plugin
    – create a new feed
    – uninstall and reinstall plugin
    – deactivate and reactivate wordfence
    – no error logs

Thanks, for about a year it was working great.

    Hi @groundskeeper,

    What version are you using?

Has anything changed that you could link to the moment the feed stopped working? Like did you update the plugin or did you install any other plugin?

    Best regards,
    Michel

Hello, I am using version 1.8.1.

It seems to have been not working for around 3 weeks now. I think a new version of wordpress has come out in that time. My theme has been updated a few times since then. I haven’t installed any new plugins. Could it be something with the server or php? Something keeping it in processing, could that be a timeout or something?

    (@michel-jongbloed)

OK, then I think it has something to do with the new version of our plugin. The feed processing has changed considerably in this version so that might cause the issue.

A first step we have to take is to clear the feed queue, because it is very well possible that there is a feed residue in the queue that prevents a new queue from starting. To do this please open the Settings page of our plugin and press the “Clear feed process” button. After that try to regenerate a few feeds one by one.

Also, do you know if your server is behind BasicAuth or using a plugin like Wordfence?

I tried clearing the feed queue, and regenerating the feed but the feed is still gets stuck in processing. What is basicauth. Is it basicauth when using SSH keys? I am using wordfence also.

    Plugin Contributor Michel Jongbloed

    (@michel-jongbloed)

Basic Auth is a page specific, HTML protection code that prevents unauthorized HTML requests. But if you’re using WordFence the we first need to look at that because WordFence also blocks some requests that are needed to run our feed process.

One other user also had WordFence running and he had the same issue. He solved it by first deactivating WordFence, then making a feed and then activating WordFence again. That worked for him, so lets try that as a first step.

So please take the following steps:
    1) First make sure the feed queue is cleared by pressing the “Clear feed process” button on the Settings page
    2) Then deactivate the WordFence plugin
    3) Generate one or two feeds
    4) Activate the WordFence plugin again
    5) Check if you still can generate feeds

    Hi @groundskeeper,

Where you able to solve the issue by taking the advised steps?

Could you at least confirm if you’re using the Wordfence plugin?

    Best regards,
    Michel

    Hi Michel,

Yes I tried the above steps on both of my sites but both feeds are still stuck and state “processing”. When I go to the feed on one of them I get this message “This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.” The link to feed on the other site is a 404 error. My hosting company states there were no errors for that plug in. I also tried increasing the PHP timeouts.

    Thanks

OK, than it’s the Wordfence plugin that is blocking the Feed generation process.

We have more reports on this issue so I am working on it trying to find out what setting is causing this and what to do about it.

In the mean time I would advise you to revert our plugin back to the previous version. You can do that by downloading the 1.7.4 version here: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wp-product-feed-manager/advanced/ and taking the following steps:

    1) Deactivate the Feed Manager plugin
    2) Remove the wp-content/plugins/wp-product-feed-manager folder from your server
    3) Copy the content of the downloaded file into the plugins folder
    4) Reactivate the Feed Manager again.

I will let you know when the issue has been solved.

    Best regards,
    Michel

    Hi @groundskeeper,

Could you try to update your plugin to the 1.8.1 version again and set your Wordfence firewall to Learning mode?

To do this, please take the following steps:

    1) Update our product feed manager to the 1.8.1 version
    2) Open the Wordfence -> Firewall page and click the Manage Firewall button
    3) Switch the Web Application Firewall Status to “Learning Mode”
    4) Enable the “Automatically enable on” option and set the date to tomorrow
    5) Open the Feed Manager -> Settings page and press the “Clear feed process” button

Now you can try to regenerate an existing feed. If this fails, press the “Clear feed process” button on the Feed Manager -> Settings page again and wait for about one hour. Then try again.

If you encounter issues with 1.8.1, or if switching to the Learning mode does not solve the issue, please revert back to the 1.7.4 version.

Please let me know the results.

    Best regards,
    Michel

Sorry, still doesn’t work. Going to try 1.7.4 when I have time.

    @groundskeeper,

Could you please check the following in your current setup:

    1) Open your Wordfence -> Tools page and than the Diagnostics tab
    2) Open the Connectivity item

Do you see an OK for the “Connecting back to this site” item, or do you have an error message there? If you have an error message there, what is it saying?

    Best regards,
    Michel

    Thread Starter groundskeeper

    (@groundskeeper)

They all say ok in the connectivity in wordfence. I am using 1.7.4 but it is still stuck “in processing queue”.

Could you try the following steps:

    1) Open the Feed Manager -> Settings page and make a backup of your feeds
    2) Open the wp-content/uploads/wppfm-backups folder and make a backup copy of the backup files and place them om your computer
    3) Deactivate and delete the plugin from the plugins page
    4) Install the plugin again (Version 1.7.4, not the new version!)
    5) Try if you can generate a new feed!
    5) Open the Feed Manager -> Settings page, usually the backup should still be there, if not, place the backup copy back in the wp-content/uploads/wppfm-backups folder.
    6) Restore the backup and see if it works again

Let me know if step 5 worked and of course of step 6 works

    Best regards,
    Michel

    Hi @groundskeeper,

Where you able to get the plugin up and running again?

We finaly have some good news (and it’s not an april fool joke :-)). Today we released new update ready. This update (version 1.8.3) has the option to disable the background process that sometimes is blocked by the Wordfence safety plugin. So in your case it should get your feeds up and running again. To get this update to work with Wordfence, please follow the next steps:

    1) Install the new update (version 1.8.3)
    2) First open the Feed Manager -> Settings page and there click on the “Clear feed process” button
    3) Just to be sure, try generating a feed. This will probabaly not work, but because the background process does have some advantages, it’s worth a try
    4) If step 3 does not work and you’re feed still stays in the processing mode, proceed with step 5
    5) Again open the Feed Manager -> Settings page and click on the “Clear feed process” button
    6) Then select the “Disable background processing” option
    7) Try regenerating a feed again and this time it should work!

Let me know the result and if everything is OK now.

    Have a nice day,
    Michel
