Allow admins to choose user role for invitees

I was wondering if it is possible to allow admins to choose which role they would like new invitees to be assigned when their accounts are activated. I’d like to override the default WP user role setting.
Basically, I have a site where I’m allowing users to register on their own and want the default role to be ‘Subscriber’. I’d like people who are invited by WP admins (using Invite Anyone) to be assigned the ‘Contributor’ role. (I’m restricting invite permission to group admins.) I’m then hoping to restrict access to most BuddyPress features to Contributors and blocking Subscribers from BuddyPress content. Anyone with experience setting something like this up. Thanks!
