I’m using Nextgen Pro and Ecommerce. I want to enable one gallery to have the images downloaded for free.
I can do this in Windows (and I believe Mac) by opening an image in the browser and using “Save Image As…”. But, I want users to be able to download images to a tablet or cell phone, Android or Apple, and so far I haven’t found a way to do that.

Is there a simple method I’m unaware of, or a plugin for Nextgen that will let people download images to a phone or tablet similarly to those using a computer?

    Hi @skyykorat,

If you have already disabled the lightbox effect ( presumably you already have disabled it since you can directly save the images on the desktop ) your gallery’s visitors should be able to save the images by using a long tap on the image.

I thought that too. But on my Android phone, I can see the thumbnails. I can do a long tap on the thumbnail and that DOES enable me to download – BUT it SAYS it’s downloading the thumbnail – thumb_nnn.jpg, NOT the actual image.
Once I tap the thumbnail and the large image opens in the gallery doing a long tap does NOT get ANY response…

I’d like to be able to have cell phone users download the actual image. Is there SOME setting I’m not aware of that needs to be set when the gallery is inserted in the page? Or something else?

    Hi @skyykorat,

That’s somehow strange. Are you able to long tap and save any other images that are opening as image links in the browser? I am definitely able to do so from my iPhone and I am almost sure that it works similarly on Android and Chrome browser at least.

Please note that once you are disabling the lightbox the full size image doesn’t have to do with NextGen Gallery plugin at all since it is loading separately without loading any of the site’s part at all so that’s 100% to browser to allow the long tap to save feature.

As far as I know I’m not doing anything with “lightbox” anywhere. I’m not sure how I would tell, but I don’t remember ever enabling anything about a lightbox.

I also checked in “Other Options” and as far as I can tell I don’t have image protection turned on – and since I CAN download an image from a computer I think that’s right. I just can’t download them on MY Android phone – I don’t know about an iPhone or someone else’s Android phone, but mine will let me long tap on OTHER images on other sites but not on mine.

Maybe I’m doing something dumb I don’t even know about, and it’ll be more obvious if someone else gives it a try:

    https://www.dperezphoto.com
Click on the icon for CFA Cat Shows
Click on 2019 Midwest Regional Cat Show and Banquet
    Click on Banquet
There are three images. Click on one to display the large image.

As I said, I can download to a computer but can’t download to a cell phone… Let me know if it works for other people.

    Hi @skyykorat,

I see that you are actually using Pro Lightbox which wouldn’t allow opening the images using the direct link and downloading images using long tap on the mobile devices.

I need to note here that NextGen isn’t meant to allow free image downloads ( aside going through the cart/checkut steps ) and doesn’t have such a built in feature so the method that we are suggesting is a trick and workaround that could be used only in case that you don’t need eCommerce, comments, share, etc functionalities that Pro Lightbox offer.

You can globally disable Pro Lightbox for the entire site from “Gallery -> Other Options -> Lightbox Effects -> What lightbox would you like to use? : None”

    Hope this makes it clear

Can you elaborate – I’m having trouble with the whole “lightbox” thing – I don’t recall ever telling ANYTHING to use a lightbox.

Is it the galleries that are Pro Lightbox?

My problem, I THINK, is that other than the 2 galleries for which I need to provide free downloads, EVERYTHING on the site uses ecommerce and has a price list. Which is part of what’s making this difficult I think.

I have an event. In the event are a bunch of images, in sets, in a bunch of galleries. Some (most) have pricelists for the galleries and the users go through the normal order something, do the cart, etc. BUT, for this event I have 2 galleries they’d like to be able to download for free. If nothing else provides ecommerce and other functionalities, changing from Pro Lightbox doesn’t sound like a good idea.

As near as I can tell, I have the image protection turned OFF because I can’t see a way to control this at the individual gallery level. I can find “Image Protection” in “Other Options”, but that appears to be an all-or-nothing setting. CAN I turn it on and off for individual galleries?
