• Hi Guys,

We have been reviewing our SEO on our website, and realised that very few of the images we had have proper Alt Text or Descriptions.

I went to “Media Library” and clicked on each image and added the text accordingly.

I then went to Posts and the Pages and clicked on one of the posts with an image I knew had been changed….and when I looked at the attributes, there was no Alt Text at all!

There quite a few images, around 300 which I changed….. so I am wondering, should I have changed them in the Post/Pages, as opposed to Media Manager? Do I need to re-do the task in the actual post themselves?

    Thanks!

    Neiol

The fields in the media library can be thought of as default values. Page elements making use of media could possibly use these values when no overriding information is provided. This is not guaranteed, but it’s possible. Now that you’ve provided defaults, they could be used when you insert media into new posts. This will not affect existing posts though.

In order to update image attributes as used in various existing posts and pages you’ll need to edit each affected post or page and supply the desired information in each case. While cumbersome, this allows you to specify context dependent data in each case.

There might be some kind of bulk edit plugin that will update all or selected data based on library default values. I’m skeptical there is such a plugin, but it’s certainly worth doing some searching.

    Thanks for this.

There may be some images that are not set up like this, so I am guessing the ‘safest’ thing to do is put that info in via the Page/Post?

In theory, if I put that info in Page/Post image, should that same data then come up when I got to the Media section and click on the image?

No, it doesn’t work that way. Attribute data saved with the image can go from the media item to the item in a post, but data saved with the post will not go back to the image’s saved attributes.

I suggest setting reasonable default values in the media library, then also edit existing posts and pages where you want informative attribute values. The attributes in posts/pages can be the same as what you used as defaults, or information unique to the post/page. Either way, it will not affect the image’s default values.
