Alternative to WordPress?

  • Hi everyone,

    I know that there are lots of experienced bloggers on this forum and I have a question regarding the viability of WordPress as a true production system.

    I am developing links.com. Due to the nature of the site and my goals, I need very reliable blogging software with excellent support. I am willing to pay.

    I have had nothing but one problem after another with WordPress as I try to install it on Hostgator. (I used the Fantastico script). Right now, categories aren’t showing up (even on the default theme) and none of the templates are working. Documentation and support does not seem to be sufficent (I have 20 years of experience working with PC software) and what’s more, the number of problems that I am seeing crop up on this support forum is worrisome.

    So, is there another piece of software that I should look at? Is there a general forum that I can go to where blogging software pros and cons are discussed?

  • I can see your blog working at the address you gave.
    So, it is successfully installed.
    Empty categories (= no posts in them) do NOT show up by default.
    The default theme is working. Which template of thst theme does not work?

    BTW, the “number of problems” in the forum mainly go into 2 categories:
    – users not reading instructions
    – users wanting to tweak but lacking the knowledge

    I feel the same as richrf because I’ve been trying to instal word press MU and there is no helpfull errors, output or anything to tell what the problem is. ITS DRIVING ME CRAZY. But also the other blogs are all as guilty for not displaying helpfull messages.
    Ive tried LifeType (formally know as plog) at lifeType.net (which has strangle disappeared) Durple, b2Evolution, serendipity and another one which escapes me, and I havent been able to install ANY of them.
    I got the furthest with WordPress MU (this one) I got the welcome email, then whent back to my mu site and got “there is no blog bloar blar blar on this server”.
    I managed to get a bit further last night and now I get the following error … check it out >>

    Can’t select database
    We were able to connect to the database server (which means your username and password is okay) but not able to select the wordpressdbdb database.

    Are you sure it exists?
    On some systems the name of your database is prefixed with your username, so it would be like username_wordpress. Could that be the problem?
    If you don’t know how to setup a database you should contact your host. If all else fails you may find help at the WordPress Support Forums.

    Now when I installed the database I called it wordepressdb (how original) and the script ran ok, then when I wehtn back to index.php its as if the install scritp ran a second time and this time added ‘db’ to the end of the database name. I ran it again and it added another ‘db’ to the end of the database name. So the name of the database it was looking for was wordpressdbdbdb.

    Any ideas to whats going on.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the feedback so far.

    My own experiences with WordPress are that the documentation is poor and default behavior is anti-intuitive (e.g. who would have ever guessed that a category doesn’t show until a blog is posted in that category. The one and only product I’ve ever seen to work in this fashion).

    In any case, I am sure that other free software is similarly designed. I was wondering whether there is any software that can be purchased that has a more cohesive design with dependable support. If someone knows of such software or a forum where blog software is discussed, I would very much appreciate the info.
