• Hello WordPress Users,

Here is my website https://www.roannliew.com which is hosted by impactfolios.com a company which provides hosting and website templates for artists online. I have yet to renew my yearly subscription with them (which expires in a week) because I am looking into wordpress. I have had my site with impact for 5 years basically because when I needed to build a site it was easy, just upload your artwork, pick templates colors fonts. Though come to think of it, I’ve had to build my own website and pay for it. Since then I have been living in Tibetan village with no internet access so I just renewed every year with impact, partly convenience and partly well, laazines.

BUT Im bored with it. WordPress users if you can let me know if wordpress is for me.

    – I have Mac OS 10.3.9
    – I dont know how to build a website using the codes seem to me like quantum physics
    – can I “get it” in the next 5 days while I am in the city with internet access? and then work on it without internet access? Now I have internet access about once a month.
    – will my wordpress site be available in China?

    Please help,
    Roann. L

With thousands of free themes and plugins available, there’s no coding required, unless you really want to customize things.

can I “get it” in the next 5 days while I am in the city with internet access? and then work on it without internet access? Now I have internet access about once a month.

There are two ways to do this.

    1. The time-consuming, but full-featured method would be to setup your own webserver on your computer and install WordPress. This will allow you to play with a full featured WordPress installation with no internet connection. Follow this guide:

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Installing_WordPress_Locally_on_Your_Mac_With_MAMP

    2. The quick and easy, but feature-limited method would be to start a blog at https://wordpress.com/ . This will required an internet connection to use, but everything else will be basically taken care of for you at no cost. There will be some features lacking from the full installation. See this for more info: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

will my wordpress site be available in China?

Unfortunately, that’s entirely up to the “Great Firewall of China.”

I looked at your current site and to make a functionally the same on www.ads-software.com self hosted – or WordPress.COM is fairly straight forward.

It looks like you meet the Terms of Service for WordPress.COM and they have domain mapping so you can use the same Domain name – total cost under $ 20– a year. WP.COM has a pile of big servers so reliability is real good.

If I were you I would look very closely at WordPress.COM – I have both a self hosted and WP.COM sites, I also help some friends with their WP.COM sites and it can be a set it up and forget it if you want. They have a contact form built in, you can turn the comments off if you don’t want to be bothered with them.

The help Forums at .ORG & .COM have real helpful people in them.

    James,
Thanks for the reply. I saw that I need 10.4 to download MAMP. I’ll have to go see if I can get 10.4 then.

Yes, you do. Sorry about that! You’ll like 10.4, it was a big improvement over the 10.3 line.

    Salidude,

Before I go with www.ads-software.com im trying out the wordpress.COm as you suggested. Can you please show me some wordpress.com pages that are full websites not just blogs?

    Thanks, RL

    Hi Roannliew

I see that you have also posted over at WordPress.COM, one of the regulars over there knows a real good example and will post it later today, they have a half hour hold for the staff to look at things and that has upset a lot of the slaves that normally help, so there will be a delay in that help for you.

You can also sign-in to your site at WordPress.com and Dashboard >> Appearance >> Themes and look at the Themes that are available. You can do a similar thing here: https://www.ads-software.com/extend/themes/ if you decide to self host your site, WP.com has about 100 Themes, there are over 1,200 Themes or WP.org (and that is just the tip of the iceberg), I don’t think the “only” 100 Themes at WP.com is much of an issue.

I have found a link or three that might help.

    https://artgallery.gov.mv/

This is a page from my own site, it shows some projects that I have done with pictures on one side, the pictures can be set to link to another Page or Post if desired and not just a larger version of the picture: https://captnmike.com/?page_id=1049

You can also look around these sites:
https://www.ads-software.com/showcase/?s=art, a word of caution these are for the most part custom themes and the search is a bit crude.

Some general thoughts for your proposed site.

Many themes have the ability to put a picture in the header, you could put a new picture in with a montage of your work for the header.

You can also have a static page for your site with a large graphic like your current site. Then link to a second Page that has a collection of your work in thumbnails like you already do. The Thumbnails can then link to a new Page or Post for each subject that you would like to highlight.

I hope this helps a bit.
