Am I safe not upgrading from an ancient version under these conditions?

  • I have a blog I no longer update. It’s essentially just an information archive now, and I’ve shut off comments and pings, and removed the contact form. However, it’s a very old version of WP – 1.5.2. :-/ With pings, comments, etc. disabled, am I running any security risk leaving it as is?

    My plan, fairly soon, is to import it to wordpress.com. Anyone know if there would be a problem doing so with such an old version?

    Yes. You are. There are enough exploits in the wild (on the net) that could literally wipe out your blog, content (posts and all) included. And they dont need trackbacks, pings, or comments enabled to do so.

    If ive scared you into doing “something” faster, good.

    Thanks. I guess I’d better start researching the process of saving and importing it.

    Since your blog is 1.5x, I’m guessing that it’s going to be pretty easy.

    I spent some time in the codex, but wasn’t able to find out exactly how I should go about saving it. Versions after 1.5.2, I believe, began to come with an export feature which I think would save everything as an XML file (“WordPress eXtended RSS or WXR”). WordPress.com can import that. But 1.5.2, doesn’t seem to have any export feature.

    Do I therefore need to make a backup of the database using the webhost’s control panel? Will it save it in a similar, importable format? (I’m rusty on this stuff. :-/)

    Well, maybe upgrading will be the easiest way to be able to save it in an importable form. (since a later version will have an export feature) My goal, though, is to get it over to wordpress.com so I won’t have any hosting fees. No sense in continuing to pay for hosting for a blog that’s now just a static information archive.

    True. So, after you upgrade, you’ll be able to run the WP Import plugin. That’ll generate a nice little import file that you can use to import posts, pages & comments.

    However… if you just want to import Posts to wp.com, then just use the RSS import and be done. But if you want Pages and comments, that may not work so well.
