Amazon CloudFront & W3TC- unnecessary invalidation requests

Do the images still load, even though they invalidate? And is the URL the same, or do you have something like a redirect? Is the URL a direct URL to the file or is it rewritten to another location?

These 5 files (not 4 as I stated earlier) automatically generated thumbnails of the main logo image which I used in the header. They don’t load anywhere on the website AFIK. They are loading directly when I enter the image URL and there is no redirection.

I didn’t use it anywhere else and I don’t need it. Below are the files.

I’ve following plugins installed: regenerate thumbnails and smushit.

If I delete the thumbnails, will they regenerate automatically?

I have a retina display and the logo requested is https://openlabpro.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/OpenLabPro-logo-header-sticky-retina.png. Does that file exist on your server, or is it generating on page load?

Also deleting thumbnails will NOT regenerate them automatically, you have to click regenerate manually with the regenerate thumbnails plugin as far as I know. Smushit only minimizes the file size when uploaded, so that plugin is not related to the issue.

The retina display logo also exists on the server.

I’ve following thumbnails in the blog. What is the need of 800×0 600×0 600×0 200×0 sizes?

the zero value means it only resizes to fit the width, not constrain the height. I don’t see any name for it, so I guess they’re defined in a plugin or so. As you have a large list of sizes, I think you don’t need them, but that depends on if they’re used anywhere on the website.

For now you can ignore them as they’re most likely not the reason you get invalidation requests, since those sizes are not the only ones.

I’ve removed all 5 files and after accessing the images directly in the browser, the invalidation request again generated (thumbnails are again getting created). By each request to that images, the invalidation request is getting generated. Don’t know the source.

Then it might not be an issue with W3 Total Cache, but with another plugin like regenerate thumbnails. Does it occur too when you completely disable W3 Total Cache?

I’ll try out by disabling plugins.

sounds like a different plugin, not w3tc, that is generating those thumbnails. When they do i figure w3tc is trying to push them to the cdn. So your best option is to find that plugin thats generating those thumbnails and deactivate, or, go to w3tc’s cdn options and tell it to ignore those files (via regex/wildcard) so they dont get pushed/pulled to your cdn.

No. I’ve deleted these files and re-upload new ones. Now it seems fine. I couldn’t find the real reason.

Sounds to me like the files had invalid headers causing comparisons to return “not equal” or something like that. Good to hear you got it fixed!
