This last week I noticed dozens of hits coming from a bot known as amazonaws.com. Here are just a few of hits within a few minutes two days ago:
    ec2-52-34-209-246.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com
    ec2-54-83-73-161.compute-1.amazonaws.com
    ec2-54-82-156-32.compute-1.amazonaws.com
    ec2-54-205-65-244.compute-1.amazonaws.com

My Piwik blacklist is active. When I went to Github to see if it had been added to the database, I had to sign up. So, I started to install the desktop application that’s available, I noticed the download was coming from something that looked like this github.*****amazonaws.com.

I didn’t download it. So, this bot is coming from someone that’s supposed to be protecting us from bots?

amazonaws.com itself isn’t a bot, it’s Amazon’s hosting service, more than likely one of their clients were compromised and repurposed in to a bot.

Amazon is pretty good at catching that kind of behaviour so I wouldn’t expect it to last long.

Piwik does have an application, make sure you were on the right GitHub page: https://github.com/piwik/referrer-spam-blacklist
