"An error occurred in the upload. Please try again later."

  • I have been using WordPress from well over 6 years and never encountered this problem before. All of a sudden, last week, I started getting errors when uploading images above a certain file size (the limit seems to be around 200k). The error message is:

    “An error occurred in the upload. Please try again later.”

    I have never had any problems uploading images of this size before. The only way I can now get certain images to upload is if I downsample the image quality to the point where it looks horrible.

    I see some other threads in the WP support forums about similar issues, but all instruct me to post a new thread as my problem’s cause might be different.

    I have tried deactivating every single plugin and still experience the problem.

    Using WP 3.5.2 and experience this problem in Chrome, Firefox and Safari.

  • Try checking your site’s error logs for a more specific error message. Your hosts should be able to help you in accessing your site’s error logs.

    Since my site receives a large volume of traffic there are several entries in the error log per minute, but here are the past 20 entries or so:

    You seem to have a permissions error on the site that needs looking into.

    That wouldn’t explain why big files are rejected and small files are allowed to upload.

    The reason that particular IP (above) is blocked is because we block all IPs in the 65.55 block on the .htaccess level. It is a spambot from China.
