• Hi there,

Our website has been working for a long time and we haven’t made any changes (although we do have plugins set to auto update).

Today we cannot log into any admin accounts on our website, we see the error: An error was encountered while trying to authenticate. Please try again.

    Things we have tried:

If we disable Wordfence then we are able to log in. I tried disabling 2FA and reCAPTCHA, this did not solve the problem.

There are no errors in the PHP error log. I cannot find anything in the Wordfence logs. The login attempts do not show in the “Tools” section of Wordfence, so I cannot find additional information there.

I performed a conflict test and the issue occurs when Wordfence is the only active plugin.

I tried deactivating, removing and reinstalling Wordfence, this did not solve the problem. When we did this we chose to keep all Wordfence data, we don’t want to have to reset all the 2FA codes for our admins.

How can we further investigate this issue?

    Thanks

  • I’ve the same issue

ERROR: An error was encountered while trying to authenticate. Please try again.

if I rename wordfence plugin folder the login works instantly

Same issue – looks like since wordpress 6.4.3 which automatically deployed some security updates yesterday. It applies to anyone logging in via wp-login.php, not just admins. We have login widget that does work (but is limited to non admin users).

Same, here on lots of our sites, noticed seems to have happened after latest WordPress update the other day.

Hi @nekranox, @exus, @timinaust, @craigwwd thanks for letting us know!

We have had some other reports from some Premium customers for the exact same error message. However, in viewing the diagnostics of those cases there didn’t seem to be a consistent server environment.

We have since had two early reports that disabling the SeedProd plugin fixed the issue. Are you running that plugin and, if so, does deactivating that plugin resolve the issue in your case(s) too? You might have to clear your browser cache also.

Note: Our forum guidelines state for clarity and ease of resolving an issue that we can only respond to the original poster but in this case we will only look at doing that if the causes appear to be different in each occurrence.

    Many thanks,
    Peter.

I confirm that disabling the plugin resolved my issue (scan wasn’t working aswell and now it’s fixed)
I tried to re enable just to double check and it’s definetly this one:
Coming Soon Page, Maintenance Mode, Landing Pages & WordPress Website Builder by SeedProd: 6.15.22

Thanks for your help… we do (did) run “Coming Soon Page, Maintenance Mode, Landing Pages & WordPress Website Builder by SeedProd”, and yes, deactivating that fixed our problem. I am now getting in via 2FA.

Peter could you please advise me what this error may be i think it something my wordfence plugin is blocking I was running a Google Pagespeed Insights and seems not to access cannot access the site and test the performance please advise ? here is my link to that test i was trying to preform. https://pagespeed.web.dev/analysis/https-bambasements-com/0on7h2pq26?form_factor=mobile

    Thanks @exus and @timinaust,

We have now looked into the Website Builder by SeedProd – Theme Builder, Landing Page Builder, Coming Soon Page, Maintenance Mode plugin and can reproduce the issue with 6.15.22.

Their release today of 6.15.23 appears to fix logging in for users with (or without) 2FA.

    Many thanks,
    Peter.

    Hi @maxsuccess,

As noted in my original post above, unless an issue extremely closely resembles a common issue for multiple customers our forum guidelines require 1 topic per user, per issue. As your question doesn’t seem to be linked to the SeedProd 6.15.22 issue preventing users from logging in, I would recommend opening up a new topic.

    Thanks,
    Peter.

TY how would I do that to get your response ?

and on another site i ran i got this message ?

This website is not responding properly to our crawler, meaning results shown in this report may be incomplete, or inaccurate. It’s likely there is a firewall or other security mechanism in place preventing us viewing the content successfully.

Sorry keeps bringing me back to this post is there a link to another post link to reply too? did not mean to mess you up I apologize

@maxsuccess. You press the “+ Create Topic” button at the top of https://www.ads-software.com/support/plugin/wordfence/

I still face the same login error in login and by registration – system seems to be too sensitive and counts people as spam very quickly.

I put the system to learning mode + captcha as well, but it doesn’t help.
    Please help out?

Hi if it helps with numbers, I also was unable to login to my site, but disabling seedpod has for now cured the issue
