I’ll start by saying the analytics in Woo is pretty good. I do however scratch my head when it comes to Net and Gross sales. It was said in a post here that: Gross Sales are equal to the Sale price of the product(s) x quantity ordered, and this does not include refunds, coupons, taxes, or shipping. And the Net Sales are equal to Gross Sales – Refunds – Coupons. Another way to get to Net Sales is by taking Total Sales – Taxes – Shipping. This is a useless number. And so is Gross Sales.

A better number for me would be Total Sales – Returns – Coupons – Taxes = Total Income or in my mind Net Sales. I won’t include Shipping in there because that is simply an expense. All taxes collected should be paid so no need to include that. Prove me wrong by describing clearly how the current use of Gross Sales and Net Sales are actually providing value rather than just adding confusion to how much money will eventually be in my bank account.

    Hey there ??

Thanks for reaching out and for sharing feedback!

I understand your perspective on wanting a more simplified representation of income. Here’s a breakdown of the components you’ve mentioned for a clearer understanding:

    Total Income (or Net Sales):

    • Calculation: Total Sales – Returns – Coupons – Taxes.
    • Exclusion: Shipping, as it is considered an expense.

Your suggestion of Total Sales – Returns – Coupons – Taxes as a more straightforward metric aligns with the concept of Total Income. However, the inclusion of shipping in the calculation can be subjective, as it depends on whether you consider it as part of your income or solely as an expense.

It’s essential to note that the choice of metrics can vary based on individual business preferences and accounting practices. WooCommerce aims to provide a comprehensive overview, allowing users to tailor their analytics based on their specific needs.

Just to add?– if you have any ideas that could improve the WooCommerce core plugin, feel free to?submit an Enhancement request.

    Cheers!

Thank you for the reply. Perhaps there should be custom metrics and the ability to show or hide them. I would certainly hide the current Gross and Net sales as they are meaningless to me. I care mostly about real numbers that impact my cash flow. Shipping charges often include handling or they are flat fee like $10 but the real shipping costs are $15 or whatever.
