I’m also experiencing a critical error with the Yoast 21.3 update, which results in my pages becoming uneditable. Full editability is restored when Yoast is deactivated, and lost again on re-activation.

I’m using the free version of Yoast SEO, and the site has never had the premium version installed, so the issue is not exactly the same as that experienced by Chadoner in Fatal Error on Yoast 21.3 Update. The error log ([my-site].php.error.log) has no Yoast-related entries. I’m running WP 6.3.1, using the Twenty-Seventeen theme v3.2, on PHP 8.1.23.

I appreciate that this issue is unusual. I rate the Yoast SEO plugin highly and have used both free and premium versions on different sites for five years without anything similar happening.

  • Hey @andrewsheard,

Thank you for creating this topic.

Hmm, odd that your error log is not logging anything from our plugin when it happens with Yoast SEO active and not without. If you deactivate Yoast SEO and remove it from your site, and then reinstall the plugin (Plugins > Add new > Search for Yoast) and then activate it again – does the same happen?

You won’t lose any Yoast data when you do this, this will remain in your database.

Thanks for your swift reply @jeroenrotty.

I deleted and reinstalled Yoast SEO 21.3, and the problem is solved! Not only that, the editing screen loads noticeably more quickly, so maybe there was something else going on as well. I rechecked the error log, by the way, and still nothing from Yoast SEO (even while it was installed and active).

I’m really grateful for your suggestion. As you said, no SEO data was lost. And thanks generally for this excellent plugin.

Happy to know it’s resolved, and I’m glad to see that it also improved the performance for you! I’ll mark the topic as resolved.

    Have a great day!
