Another "Error establishing a database connection" confirmed creds via console

Hi Guys

I know this topic has been done to death but after looking through the list of posts regarding this particular issue, I have not found anything specific to my situation.

I run a number of virtual servers in FreeBSD (8.1) jails, for this purpose: one runs apache (1.3)/wordpress the other runs MySQL51.

Access to the wordpress database on MySQL is restricted by username, password and the webservers ip, the user had been granted all privileges on the ‘wordpress’ database.

I have configured the my.cnf correctly as I can access the wordpress database via console/client without issue and have copied these details directly into wp-config.php. But when I open my.domain/wp-admin/install.php I get an “Error establishing a database connection”.

I am stumped… please suggest another possible cause ??
