    Hello

I’ve been using Site Kit for some time now, and I’m pretty satisfied. However, today I had to move one of the properties from one Analytics account to another. I own both accounts, and they are both accessible from my Google account. But after moving the property to another account, Site Kit cannot connect to Analytics. I get this error when trying to connect:

We’ve detected there’s already an existing Analytics tag on your site (ID SECRET, BUT CORRECT PROPERTY ID), but your account doesn’t seem to have access to this Analytics property. You can either remove the existing tag and connect to a different account, or request access to this property from your team.

I’ve tried reconnecting my Google Account, resetting Site Kit, giving full Admin rights to Google account / the property. Nothing works.

    What gives?

    Hi @danielfrank,

Thanks for reaching out, and sharing the details of what you’re encountering. So we can investigate this further or provide some troubleshooting suggestions please share the following:

    1. Your Site Health information. You can use this form to share privately if preferred.
    2. When you moved the property from one account to another can you confirm you have applied both admin and editor rights on the new account, as per this guide?
    3. When you reset Site Kit (Tools > Available Tools > Reset Site Kit) and connected once more did you use the Google Account which you moved the property to, and not the provious Google account where you moved the property from? I ask as the Google Account you’ve used to connect Google Analytics should be the same Google account which you use to connected the Analytics module.

Let me know of the above. I’ve also perform some checks on my side with various scenarios where this may occur.

    Hello James

    1: Form submitted.

2: What guide? I’ve checked the rights for both accounts and my Google Account is admin in all categories. But I could be missing something.

3: As already mentioned, I’m using the same Google Account for both properties / analytics accounts. I just moved the property from one analytics account to a new one:

    Hi @danielfrank,

Thanks for submitting the form and apologies, I never included the link to the guide. See below:
    https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/6370521#about

In the guide it mentions to provide both editor and administrator access for both the source and destination accounts. If you’ve selected the second option when copying (Replace existing views and permissions…) it’s possible that the permissions are not aligned. Let me know if you’ve applied both roles when moving.

From looking at the form you provided it looks like you have your Analytics snippet placed using another plugin. We can perform some checks with using Site Kit solely to place your Analytics snippet after you confirm that you’ve applied both an administrator and editor role above.

I believe I went with option to keep the existing rights. I believe that I’ve made sure to check all the rights.

In all these tabs my Google Account is set to Administrator. I can’t enable multiple rights for my account, only chose one type of rights:

Yes – I’m using a secondary plugin to include my analytics tag. Site Kit is just for reviewing the analytics.

Thanks for the update. Providing all the permissions are correct within your Analytics settings lets try and use Site Kit alone to insert your Analytics property.

In order to do so can you temporarily deactivate the third party Google Analytics related plugin. After doing so attempt to connect the Analytics property within Site Kit once more. As there is no existing snippet you should be able to select the property you moved within the property dropdown, using the account which you moved this to.

After connecting the Analytics module within Site Kit you can revisit the Analytics settings within the plugin and remove the Site Kit placed snippet if you wish (Site Kit > Settings > Analytics > Edit > Place Universal Analytics code). This will allow you to reactivate your third party Google Analytics plugin, in order to ensure there is a valid Analytics snippet place, while making use of the third party plugin.

Let me know how you get on with the above, or if you have any questions. I’m also performing some testing on our side to recreate the same experience so if you run into any issues selecting the account or property above let me know.

    @jamesosborne! That did the trick.

Removing the 3rd party plugin, which in my case was “GA Google Analytics”, made it possible to move on with Site Kit.

Thank you so much for your help.

Happy to hear it, thanks for the update. Note that you don’t have to remove any third party plugin, Site Kit can recognise a manual or third party plugin inserted snippet during setup. In this case it sounds like there may have been a conflict after moving the property, with the property possibly registered on the Site Kit service to another account (from the other plugin inserted snippet).

If you have any further queries or run into an errors or warnings going forward be sure to reach out. Best of luck with your site.

Good to know. But since Site Kit already implements the tag, might as well just delete the other plugin.

    Thanks again ??

    Hi @danielfrank,

Based on your report of this I’ve also been doing some testing and I’ve since created the below GitHub issue:
    https://github.com/google/site-kit-wp/issues/4635

Many thanks for bring this to our attention. For users like you, who have a non Site Kit placed snippet present and then decide to move the property this could be a potential improvement. So thank you for your contribution, however unintentional!

Terrific! I’m glad it could be of some use to identify a potential issue. ??
