Any good advice for a new hosting company?

  • I’m furious at WPWebhost.

    I was stupid enough to use the one-touch upgrade without doing a backup. Now, I cannot login to the main site at blogpeoria.com.

    No image file that has been uploaded will appear (even though the files are there). WPWebhost tells me it’s a redirect issue. This is the error message they are fixating on:

    Well, they have been telling me for TWO DAYS now that they are going to retrieve a database prior to my upgrade attempt. And that’s all they are doing. Every time I contact them, they send me an email telling me that are in the process of updating.

    48 hours.

    Any advice?

  • Updating from WPMU2.9 to WP3?

    Do you have FTP access? If so, you’ll want to disable the theme or plugin(looks like a comment_indexer, post_indexer, and a global comments widget from wpmudev) that is throwing those sql errors.

    Move all plugins/mu-plugins/themes(except twentyten or a stable default that doesn’t depend on plugins) to some another temp dir and add them back into the mix one at a time after you get your config/htaccess defaults/updates sorted out.

    Yes, many plugins – especially WPMU type – and themes especially those with theme options – need to be updated. Try em one at a time to figure out which bork your site, and which don’t.

    OK.

    I followed all your advice.
    I removed all themes except twentyten and the kubrick-based home theme.
    There are no plugins except “Akismet”

    I was not able to log into the front page site, but I was able to long into a site with my admin password.

    When I checked “sites” I discovered that site ID 1 was missing. I checked blogs.dir and found that all the directors for “1” were missing too.

    I tried to upload a partial database from about a month earlier that includes wp_1 database information, but when I visit “sites” in the dashboard, site ID 1 is still not listed.

    Wow. If my site borked or what?

    Any advice, except to wait for the host company to finally retrieve a database?

    And this is the message I get when I try to call the front page up in google:

    This webpage has a redirect loop.

    The webpage at https://blogpeoria.com/wp-signup.php?new=blogpeoria.com has resulted in too many redirects. Clearing your cookies for this site or allowing third-party cookies may fix the problem. If not, it is possibly a server configuration issue and not a problem with your computer.

    I assume this is because the site is trying to create a new site called “blogpeoria.com” but to do to a signup, there must be a site already existing called “blogpeoria.com.”

    No, it;s trying to *find* a site called that, but as you previously posted, the main site tables are missing.

    In 3.0 and up, creating a network does NOT make a wp_1_ set of tables. nor does it store the main blog’s files in the blogs.dir folder.

    Any chance things got restored to a WP network instead of an upgraded mu site?

    Andrea: All I know is a clicked on the button on the Dashboard to upgrade to WordPress 3.0.1

    And I don’t have a recent backup on my own hard drive. I’m in contact with my host to find a recent backup and to restore ONLY tables for “wp_1”

    Am i on the wrong track?

    I’d go look in the db myself first.

    Andrea_r: would you mind giving it a look-see? The hosting company sent me an email overnight pronouncing the siter cured, but it is still having the exact same problems as before. Can I send you the cpanel and db usernames and password?

    Both of the errors in your original posts have to do with plugins for widgets.

    Did you remove them?
    Did you find them and upgrade them?

    Yep. I sure did. I went back to only Akismet. And only the default theme. Same problem.
