• I realise that this has been discussed for 4 years now (TAKE THAT AS A HINT WORDPRESS) but has anyone actually found a way to stop wordpress removing line breaks in the visual editor? Searching google brings up threads from years ago

I have TinyMCEAdvanced plugin but unfortunately it wraps everything in <p> tags which breaks oembed functionality.

Before any tells me to use the HTML editor or anything like that, this is for clients, the whole point in a CMS, for people who are not technically mindedm to use. I simply cant ask clients to do anything in the code editor, or paste something in when they should just be able to press enter when they want.

Did WordPress ever give a reason for this stupid, unwanted functionality?

Obviously this wont get a reply on here, nothing ever does. They should close this forum

  • I have been fighting the same darn problem for years. How is it possible such a stupid problem that is so widespread does not warrant a fix?

I am tired of using dumb tricks like copy pasting into notepad, and then back into the visual editor, or going into the code and adding breaks into the HTML editor. Like you mentioned this is difficult to explain to newer people.

Please give us an actual way to fix this problem, and not a precarious workaround….

I love wordpress, but this problem has been the bane of my existance for far too long, I constantly have to update wordpress and every single time I cross my fingers that this is fixed… but it never is…

Maybe its time to find a new CMS

I rely heavily on WP and I’m really at my max frustration level with this problem. I own multiple sites all of which use WP and this has been a problem for YEARS

Can you guys at least acknowledge its a problem and tell us what the deal is instead of just ignoring all the complaints?

This isn’t a small glitch, the freakin return key doesn’t work. That’s a big deal…

Well I spent a few hours yesterday, and a few more hours today working on the problem. Still no real solutions despite trying various plugins.

Glad wordpress support is getting back to us so quick on this one….. /sarcasm

still waiting on an answer wordpress.

I guess I’ll just keep bumping this until someone hopefully replies someday.

    Bump Bump

If you are using TinyMCE Advanced, you can go to the settings panel for TinyMCEAdvanced and check the “Stop removing <p> and
    tags” option.

When editing a post, hold down the “shift” key when you hit enter and that will insert a
. You can insert as many as you want and they should all remain upon saving.

    Godspeed,
    Omar

Another trick is to hit the enter key, then the space bar, then the enter key again. This basically adds a <div>&nbsp;</div> to the html code, thus resulting in a blank line. Repeating this step will result in multiple blank lines.

I tried this and it didn’t work…what’s the trick? I’m setting a WP site up for a client specifically because they don’t want to have to mess with any html, and this isn’t helping.

BTW, I agree with everyone else, this issue with line breaks SUCKS…

my way to (partially) address this issue in static pg entries is a CSS hack for extra padding so text gets pushed down from the top (line spacing adjustment). otherwise, i’ve tried everything possible to manually create a hard return or line break anywhere else w/no success whatsoever.

    total pain in the ass

Couldn’t agree more.. waiting for a solution as well.
