• I have spent a lot of time trying to find a plugin with the functions I need, but have been stymied. Any tips for researching a plugin?

I am trying to make a social intranet for a sailing club, but where the general public can see some things, but not all. The club members can log in, friend each other, post photos against a topic, and collaborate on events.

The club organizers need to push information to the members.

I have BuddyPress and SportsPress installed, and it is close, but does not provide a means for members to share photos for past events, etc.

Should I be looking for a single plugin, or a mashup of plugins? Should I count on customizing the plugins myself, or is it unrealistic to expect to find a WordPress plugin to do all of this?

What have you tried? Have you tried specific plugins?

Yes, I’ve tried several. As I said, the closest to my needs are BuddyPress and a related plugin called SportsPress. I have been searching, reading, then installing some plugins to try them. I guess I’m looking for some guidance about whether I should continue my search, or look at some other platform. Here is a list of functions I am looking for:
    1. Profiles – Allow Members to Look Up
    2. Private Messages – Members can Contact Other Members
    3. Groups – Members can be part of a group, such as Skippers
    4. Roles – Administrators, organizers, and members
    5. Notifications – E-mail is sent to notify of a response to a topic they follow; organizers can push information; Calendar reminders
    6. Members Easily post photos of past events [with approval]
    7. Calendar events have a public / private face
    8. Photos visible to public (showcase our club)
    9. Allow Members to Self-Organize (collaboration)
    10. Mobile Device Friendly
    11. Chat area for each even
    12. Streams – what is this?
    13. Reserve for events without “login friction”
    14. Administrators can easily import and manage members
    15. Administrators can be appointed to Post to the Calendar

Update: I have started looking for a different solution than WordPress. WordPress seems to be targeted toward BLOG functionality, and content publishing. There’s nothing wrong with that, I just am doubtful I can assemble a set of plugins that accomplish all of my functionality requirements. I’m currently looking at Drupal, which will probably require a lot of customization, but advertises a lot of build in functions that I need.
