• Hi

Is there any way at all around the requirement for the permalink structure in wordpress to be Post Name?

Our permalink structure is /%category%/%postname/ and this is something we want to keep because this will allow us to have more segmented remarketing (where we can remarket based on the kind of blog post they have viewed). So we really can’t change to the post name permalink structure.

However, this means that the Ontrapages integration isn’t working (when I try and publish a post, it gives me a 404 page not found). And I REALLY want it to work so we can stop using Leadpages and just use Ontraport for everything.

Can you help? Is there any way around this requirement??

The website for this is https://londoncoachinggroup.com

Let me know if there’s further information you need from me…

  • There is currently no way around the requirement that you use %postname% for the protected pages.

We do have an active feature request for allowing additional permalink structures at https://support.ontraport.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/208699028-ONTRApages-Plugin-Allow-Use-of-other-Custom-Permalink-structure-not-just-Post-Name-structure

You need to be logged in to see that link. From inside your ONTRAPORT account click the blue Question Mark icon at the top right, then select “Feedback and Feature Requests” and you will be logged into our helpdesk. You can then paste that URL into the browser to see and vote on the feature request!

It works if I put ?ontraport= before the slug for that page.

This may be something to pass forward to whoever updates the knowledge articles and maybe to whoever creates the plugins that an extra step needs to be included in the instructions under the “Publishing Your ONTRApage” section and in the WordPress subsection.

The instructions end with the “Add New” link button. However, after you have added your ONTRApage, the plugin does not automatically add ?ontrapage to the URL. I had no idea that I was required to put in ?ontrapage= before the URL, and so I was trying to view the page and it wasn’t working. See here: https://screencast.com/t/jtdzIRPAjl

So I think an extra step in the article needs to tell people that ONTRApages are then accessed through <yoururl>/?ontrapage=<your-page-slug>

We don’t recommend using anything other than the %postname% permalink structure, but I will check with our developer and see if there’s any problem with your work-around (I’d hate to recommend something that will break all your links with the next WP or ONTRApages update).

Ah I see. Thank you I appreciate you checking if there’s any problem with doing it this way. We really can’t use just %postname% as the categories are used to further stream our readers so we can retarget more effectively with content they are actually interested in – and that’s not something we want to lose.

Please do let me know if and when you find out from your developers if this is ok or if there’s an issue with using ?ontrapage=

Hi – just checking in on this, have you managed to find out if there’s a problem with using ?ontrapage= ?

For some reason this topic was closed when I came to update it last Friday. I did update the post in our Feature Request forum at: https://support.ontraport.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/208699028-ONTRApages-Plugin-Allow-Use-of-other-Custom-Permalink-structure-not-just-Post-Name-structure

We don’t know of any problems using the format you found that works for your permalink structure so we are “agnostic” on it. We did a bit of testing and it works for the ONTRApages plugin. I’m assuming you would use the URLs in links you create in email, on other pages, etc.

The only concern our developers had was that a change in the future by WP could break your links. They can’t foresee a change we would do that would interfere with it. Our hesitancy is because we have been stung by WordPress changes in the past. You’ll have to keep an eye on it and make sure WP updates don’t break your links.

BTW – we are still looking at coding a way to accept the /%category%/%postname% permalink structure in the future. I told our devs that many people are doing exactly what you are doing and remarketing based on the category.

Oh weird that it was closed. Thanks for looking into it and updating me. Yeah I think a lot things can unfortunately break when wordpress updates, which is why I’m always cautious to give myself a few hours of time everytime I hit the update wordpress button to fix anything that might have gone wrong!

Thanks for letting me know and I’ll keep a look out for it, and for the update to the plugin that will allow us to use our permalink structure.
