A few days ago, I installed WordPress on my website using Softaculous. Now, before I start creating content and posting on my website, I wish to make sure everything functions. I would like for visitors to be able to create accounts, maybe even allowing them access to specific member-only blog posts. For that, I installed Paid Memberships Pro.

It seems to do its job just fine, allowing already existing users (created using the standard user tab) to log on and access their profile information. However, when looking into how to enable visitors to create their own accounts, I found there should be a switch called “Anyone can register”, located in the Settings->General tab. Looking there, I couldn’t find it, nor could I see similarly titled options anywhere else on the WordPress dashboard (when logged in as either Super Admin or Admin).

Researching this, I figured it could be due to plugins overriding the default setting, so I disabled all plugins, switched back to the default theme, but no result. I then installed another plugin for user accounts, but no result either. When trying to use that plugin’s user registration widget, it just said “User registration disabled”.

I even tried going to phpMyAdmin to manually change the 0 to a 1, but it doesn’t allow me to manually alter any data in there, and, thinking about it, it shouldn’t be the case that I’d have to it that way; it should be visible as a checkbox in the Settings tab. When clicking on Help->Documentation on the aforementioned page, a screenshot is shown exactly as it’s supposed to look – with the checkbox visible. On my dashboard, it only shows Site Title, Tagline, Administration Email Address, Site Language, Timezone, Date Format, Time Format, Week Starts On.

I’m currently on version 6.4.2. Does anyone know why there’s no “Anyone can register” switch or something similar on my dashboard?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Sound like you accidentally installed a multisite. The option does not show on a multisite.

@alanfuller, yes, I did install a multisite, thinking it might come in handy later, if I should decide to migrate this install to a subdomain of the site, in order to have multiple installs on different subdomains. What would you recommend if I decide to do so without a multisite install? And, more importantly, can I change to a non-multisite install without deleting everything? Can I just use the backups I made to restore what I have now after a clean install?

It is easy enough to create separate single installs for sub domains

And, more importantly, can I change to a non-multisite install without deleting everything?

Moving from a multi site to a single site is technicaly hard. There are several (premium) plugins that in theory will do a migration but my experience is that they never work cleanly.

In my experience, unless you really need a multi-site then just go for several standalone sites.

This blog post is my notes to myself on how to migrate from multi to single site https://badlywired.com/2020/11/migrate-from-multisite-to-standalone-wordpress/

I completely wiped the server and did a fresh install of WordPress – thanks for your advice!
