Anyone have guidance to style the search bar?

CSS is not my strong suit (though I am studying it at university) and it appears that using it is the only way to style the search bar properly. Unless I’m missing something?
What I’m looking for is a template for styling it that will give me a baseline to change it to suit the website I’m building. I’m not looking to copy and paste and then be done, just really a little guidance.

Here is the styling I used on https://www.fbrseed.com
There is also a bit of jQuery involved which is used for toggling the Radio buttons in the search form…
