• I have successfully upgraded to 1.5 and ironed out the commenting problems I was having by using a more recent version of comments.php. Commenters have to enter name and email, have previously commented and I have the hashcash plugin installed. I uninstalled spaminator as it caught and banned a few friendly commenters.

A regular reader tells me that she has not been able to comment (since the upgrade to 1.3). When she presses submit, she is sent to a blank screen instead of comments-post.php displaying her comment.

Can anyone throw any light on why an aol user should be treated differently from my other commenters?

You might want to have her check her IP and header information and give it to you and then check to see if it is listed within your comment spam filters.

I’ve been knocked out of some comments because of really intense (and terrified) bloggers overdoing their spam protection. We all need to protect ourselves, but some people wrap themselves up in a cellophane bubble with steel reinforcements.

This spam crap is exhausting and takes a toll on all of us, so I understand the cellophane really well.

Her IP address is not in my list, and even if it was, she would be sent to moderation, rather than not being sent anywhere at all.

The only things I can think of are kittens spam words – is there a way of seeing the list of IP addresses which have been banned? And the blacklist checkbox ticked for open/insecure proxies.

I guess I’ll try having her comment when not using these and try to work out by a process of elimination what is going on.

Ask her if she has javascript enabled. Wp-HashCash requires javascript to be enabled in order to comment. If javascript is disabled, the user will see a blank wp-comments-post.php. To test it, deactivate WP-HashCash and ask her to comment. Also, make sure that you are running HashCash v1.7 (for WP v1.5):

aha. now I come to think of it, she was able to comment briefly for about a day when I was doing the re-install and didn’t have hashcash plugged in.

I’ll give that a try thank you.
