Apache 2.4: .htaccess is no good

Yup – came here to report the same thing.

Replaced with:

Require all denied

<FilesMatch "^(form|akismet)\.(css|js)$">
Require all granted
</FilesMatch>

#allow access to any image
<FilesMatch "^(.+)\.(png|gif)$">
Require all granted
</FilesMatch>

And all is peachy

If it’s working, you should be able to directly access /wp-content/plugins/akismet/class.akismet.php in your browser, but you should be able to access /wp-content/plugins/akismet/_inc/img/logo-full-2x.png

Yes, your new .htaccess is working as expected: *.php denied, *.img allowed. Nice compatibility hack; too bad it was necessary.
